PENTAGON One woman will make history next week as the first female Marine to join the infantry through the traditional entry-level training process that was previously unavailable to women, officials tell VOA.
The Marine is finishing up her training as a mortarman and will graduate next week from the U.S. Marine Corps School of Infantry at Camp Geiger in eastern North Carolina, said Marine Capt. Joshua Pena, a spokesman for the Marine Corps Training and Education Command.
Officials say the newest woman in the infantry will go to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment in Camp Pendleton, near San Diego, California.
The Marines now have a total of four women in the infantry. Three female Marines joined 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in January after making a lateral move request to join the infantry.
Those three were among 144 female Marines who graduated from the Marine Corps' School of Infantry in 2013-2015, when it was temporarily opened up to women in order to study how gender integration would affect combat readiness. Each of the three women has entered the infantry under the specialty she successfully trained for while attending the school.
The results of the Marine Corps' gender integration study showed that male-only Marine units were faster and more lethal. When it came to critical thinking, however, the joint male-female units outperformed the male-only groups.
Female Marines were given the opportunity to join an infantry unit after former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter ordered that all military positions, including all combat positions, be opened to women beginning in 2016.
The Marine Corps had requested an exemption for infantry and armor positions, but Carter overruled the request, saying the military should operate under a common set of standards.

Ridiculous.
12 pull ups, please.
FAKE NEWS
I’m having trouble understand what they mean by “female”. Pre-op, post-op, trans, intra, inter, congenital, etc.
8 years of leftist pc fag crap. GD Ash carter and his liberal nonsense. Mattis better fix this quick.
This all becomes a MOOT point when all infantry will be automated — but the robot AI could have gender issues. Okay, this is depressing.
The administration should crush this now, and roll back whatever has been done.
I don’t have any faith in Mattis. I was fully on board with the nomination and selection of him, but his choice for undersecretary and his remarks on climate change have changed my opinion of him.
I thought of all people he might, but anyone who believes in AGW also believes women can fight in combat as well as men.
And they cannot.
I wonder how many young MEN will die as a result, on the alter of political correctness to support these women "breaking a barrier"?
Just read the other day about the very serious pregnancy problem the Marine Corps has. Surely this will help alleviate it.
I believe women could serve in combat arms units. I do not believe Infantry units are a good match. Why on Earth are we attempting this "experiment" at the risk of getting our people killed?
If I had it my way:
All branches would have a PT test based upon their assigned MOS / duty. These would be divided into three fields - combat, combat support and support
Support PT test would consist of 3 exercises - push ups, situps and 2 mile run. This would represent the minimum requirement.
Combat support would add one additional test (pull ups?) and one specific MOS task (called a practical). For example fire suppression personnel would have a hose carry sprint or repetition lift or some such. Each combat support MOS would identify the most common or demanding activity and design a test around that activity.
Combat units would add one more test (medicine ball ore weight lift/body rotate?) and one more practical (say a ruck march for infantry, curls of artillery or tank shells, etc.
full disclosure - as a former Infantryman, I do not believe that the vast majority of women can physically perform as needed in combat, nor do I believe the military should be required to adapt to those few who can.
Yeah, that critical thinking would have really helped the Marines with the hand-to-hand combat in the Pacific theatre, at Chosin, and at Hue and around Khe Sanh,but...everyone knows war simply isn’t fought like that anymore.

I wonder if she will be required to carry the base plate. Lol!

What do you want from your marines, fast and lethal, or being able to do soduku while running away?
