Public broadcasting fires back at White House over proposed budget cuts
Yahoo News ^ | March 16th, 2017 | Christopher Wilson

PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting have pushed back against a White House budget proposal that would drastically cut, or eliminate entirely, funding to the organizations as part of a major realignment of fiscal priorities that includes a big increase in defense spending.

“PBS and our nearly 350 member stations,” said a statement released Thursday, “along with our viewers, continue to remind Congress of our strong support among Republican and Democratic voters, in rural and urban areas across every region of the country. We have always had support from both parties in Congress, and will again make clear what the public receives for federal funding for public broadcasting. The cost of public broadcasting is small, only $1.35 per citizen per year, and the benefits are tangible: increasing school readiness for kids 2-8, support for teachers and homeschoolers, lifelong learning, public safety communications and civil discourse.”

The statement also cites one poll showing that only 21 percent of Americans (32 percent of Republicans) favor ending public broadcasting support, and another that found 70 percent of Trump voters (and 83 percent of Americans overall) saying they want Congress to find savings elsewhere.

I listen to NPR sometimes in my truck on the way into town. Seems like every program ends like this...

ANNOUNCER: I’d like to thank my guests, [liberal #1], [liberal #2] and [liberal #3] for sharing their ideas today...

They hardly ever have on conservatives.

Cut their funding! Let them figure some other way to pay for their uber liberalspeak.

Fund it with the profits from all those super merchandising shows they gear towards children. Why do they need taxpayer money to keep going? Anyone know how much sesame street, barney or teletubbies made in profits over the years?

They are called “underwriters” to make it sound all warm and fuzzy.

I called those spots commercials once and got an earful from a producer.

Sesame Street isn’t on PBS any more, and the Met will still have a home—as will all these liberal propaganda stations. The reason only conservative talk radio has been commercially viable is that NPR has captured the liberal audience.

Fun season, looking forward to the log-rolling and back-scratching that Congress will be forced to make.

The Congressional Critters will have to “own” the budget.

Hold on here... Let's examine the statistic:
The cost of public broadcasting is small, only $1.35 per citizen per year...

What is the cost using the number of residents, where the service is readily available? The divisor plunges like a rock, when all of the "dead" (no reception or lousy reception) areas are considered.

Thus, the cost of the broadcast service is much, much higher on a per capita using the appropriate data set.    Again, skewed data from the Control-LEFT media.

"Send them to George Soros for funding."

I would be surprised if they don't get money from George, but then maybe George is smarter than that or maybe they contribute to George.

The headline says "fire back" when PBS has been sniping at Trump from before day 1.

NPR gives a long list of contributors in each broadcast but they omit George and "taxpayers like you" from the list. Just oversights, I am sure.

Go deeper. If your cable is $60/month for 145 channels, and PBS is just one channel (likely more), than it costs $4.96/year to get it.

I’ll wager many of CPB/PBS/NPR funding organizations are Soros-linked. Time for the 5m candlepower spotlights on them all.

If PBS was truly apolitical it may have a point but otherwise shut it down.

The vast majority of the broadcasts on cable are junk. Much of the monthly charge is linked to subsidizing the sports channel.

Folks living outside of the urban area do not receive cable.

George Soros has been bankrolling road trips for anarchists to places like Atlanta, Los Angeles and Ferguson. He can fork out a few billion here and there to cover the human needs gleaned from the self-declared human rights of his ersatz employees, or else.

I don’t know how Trump is going to do all he said he would do... he aims to keep his promises, but there are other things that maybe no one knew would be in effect.

How do we not know soros or someone, is paying off even some of the republicans in anything Trump tries and gets blindsided by even his own party. obama wants his healthcare to survive.. and I’d bet he’s got someone making payments to those republicans.. even ryan.. would not surprise me. and the illegal immigration.. i’m sure obama is the one keeping those judges saying no... Trump’s administration is not even close to being finalized... it’s one slow day after another to get those things done. If Sessions doesn’t plow into that mess and bring them in... even obama.. then it’s not going to happen like it should.. we voted and they are pulling the plug to every item Trump is working on. I cannot stand to think obama is still calling the shots after we voted and have a new President... is it obams 3rd term? I just can’t stand that thought!!

fr, I'm completely in tune with your sentiments. I'm convinced that the Congressional Republican leadership is 100% compromised. I call them "Obama's Republicans". I don't know whether they came to Washington with good intentions, but they've been totally assimilated. They hate Trump and what he stands for; they wanted him to fail. That he won the election is truly a miracle and it pains them no end. Clinton winning would have allowed them to continue the farce, with them lining their pockets all the while telling the rubes back home "Hey, we're doing what we can." With Trump, now they have to actually KEEP to their promises! "OH DAMN!"

What's going to happen? I don't know. What should we do? Campaign like heck for GOP replacements in 2018 - support them as best you can; Pray.

“I wonder if they shared shows via kinescope, as was done in the late ‘40 and early ‘50s, for the networks. Did you watch it back then? “

No,we couldn’t afford a TV until the mid fifties.

I always enjoyed public TV but rarely watched ANY TV in the 70s and 80s. When my granddaughter was born in the early 90s I started putting on the kids’ shows for her in the AM and was STUNNED to find that they had advertisements geared to children. Brief ads,but ads nonetheless.

That was it for me——I rarely watch it now.

If their fund raisers can't raise 1.35 more per person per year, then their vaunted level of support is imaginary.
