Even before Donald Trump was inaugurated, U.S. citizens who own land along the border reportedly began receiving letters from the Justice Department informing them that the federal government wants their land to build a fence (i.e. the presidents border wall), that it intends to acquire their land, and the amount of compensation the government is offering.

It's come to that.
I think it would be so much easier to just push the border into Mexico and build it there.
Thank you!
Were the land owners compensated?
The Antiquities Act he used to declare the monuments only applies to land already owned or controlled by the feds.
So, no.
Yes we did, then we turned around and gave Mexico $5,000,000 to compensate them for the territories we won fair and square. Treaty of Guadelupe.
My third great grandfather fought, and was captured, in that war. His father (US AG John Jay Crittenden) brokered a prisoner swap to save him.
Do you really think the people who live on the border haven’t already been subjected to what the illegal aliens dish out?
Looks like Yvette just wants to negotiate the price a little more in her favor. Smart.
I was born and raised in Beijing China. 30 years ago just 2 weeks before I boarded airplane for America I bought a bus ticket to Great Wall just so in case Americans ask me about it and I would not have to say I’ve never been there. It turns out during these 30 years past no one asked me about it. 2 years ago I went back for home visit and climbed the Great Wall again, I was put in awe by it’s magnificence. I wish America had such a Wall along southern border, attracting millions tourists and bringing billion dollar each year as well as stoping all bad things at there
Fake news.
It’s good we have the ACLU posting here.
“Its good we have the ACLU posting here.”
It’s not about the ACLU, it’s about property owner’s rights under the 5th Amendment.
“New wrinkle in the wall: may need Congress to pass a bill to acquire the tribal lands for a wall. If Congress needs to pass something, filibuster is possible unless tied to “must pass” legislation.”
Then just build the rest and fill-in leftover parts when able.
And I say this not even necessarily being a huge wall proponent.
This is one time that I could agree with the government using eminent domain, as it is for our country’s protection.
“Wasnt there a couple killed, a few years back, while they were boating or something?”
The couple from Oklahoma? The scoundrel who killed them died in prison this week.
The federal government is very efficient with a Declaration of Taking.
Kelo comes to mind
“Fake news.”
What part is fake news?

you will see the Department of Justice letter dated January 12, 2017 and the original 2006 Declaration of Taking.
“Im about to the point where I wouldnt mind if Trump abolished congress and appointed himself king.”
And the Judge in Hawaii should have a scuba diving “accident!”
It’s been awhile that I read up on this, but in certain areas the Fed has already bought the land and fenced it off in preparation for construction of a “wall” (more like a fence...) Like several years ago. The trouble for the landowners is the government pays for acres along the Rio Grande, but now the cattle can’t get to the water, which makes many more acres useless to the rancher - which the government didn’t compensate him for.
An actual “wall” build on our side of the river will obviously prevent the cattle from getting to water. I suppose (hope?) that the wall or double fence or whatever will allow the cattle did get to the water.
“Middle Easterners criss into the US from the Canadian border onto the reservations in upstate NY. “
Akwesasne. Illegal immigrants go south and illegal guns and drugs go north.
