Australia Takes Aim at Guns, Again, After Confiscation Scheme Fails to Disarm Criminals

The much-heralded Australian gun confiscation scheme of the late 1990s failed to disarm criminals to such a degree that Australia is going after guns again, beginning in July of this year.

In other words, the gun confiscation scheme Hillary Clinton praised on October 16, 2016, as “worth looking at” for gun policy in America actually created an uneven playing field where law-abiding citizens turned in their guns while criminals retained theirs.

The NRA-ILA reports:

In a tacit admission that criminals and scofflaws have had little trouble circumventing Australia’s National Firearms Agreement (NFA) and the government’s confiscation effort, Australian officials have set a date for another firearms amnesty program. The program is set to begin in July and last for three months. Despite offering no compensation for surrendered firearms, government officials hope that the plan will net 260,000 of an estimated 600,000 illegally possessed guns.

Hmmm. How about they offer the bad guys free unlimited shrimp on the barbie. They'll surely turn their illegal guns in then.

How can they be so stupid?

They are Liberals.
If something fails it must be because you didn't do enough of it.
They really believe this.

But how can they be so stupid to think they are better off unarmed. They are a formerly wilderness society, like the US. Where did they ever get the idea that personal ownership of guns is a bad thing?

I guess I’m being naive, but I don’t know a lot about their history.

For some reason, it is hard for me to imagine the Australians voluntarily giving up their guns.

It just doesn't jive with the images of a hardy, individualistic, no-nonsense type people. At least those outside the big cities. Maybe it's like it is here, all the liberals live in the urban areas and the conservatives in the rural areas.

Because their intention is to take guns from the non-violent, honest people and to deliberately leave them on the hands of violent criminals.

Wilderness Society, but one of the most urbanized countries in the world. When I lived there in the late 70’s, over 90% of the population lived in 7 cities. Truth is most people are city dwellers and don’t really have a frontier attitude.

“I thought they had already given up their guns.”

Only the law abiding people gave up their guns, since then the criminals can do what ever they want. And that’s what the libs want for us in the United States. Like the old saying goes, “You can lead a liberal to logic; but, you can’t make him think.”

Turn in your guns to feel better, no other compensation. I gave Australia more credit than they deserve apparently.

Funny how Legally owned Guns become Illegally owned Guns after some Politicians conspire to make up a new Law.

The Guns don’t change, but the Politicians do.

More Laws, less Freedoms. Works every time.

The Australian government knows that now, many of the hardheaded owners who refused to surrender prohibited firearms years ago, may be deceased. They're going after the relatives who now possess those guns - but are more inclined to be good, obedient sheep.

I think the estimate is grossly over-optimistic, anyway.

Big difference compared to the U.S. We had many freedom-loving, God-fearing Scots Irish pioneers; whereas Australia was just a British penal colony consisting of the dregs of society.
