Utah could soon have the strictest DUI threshold in the nation after state lawmakers on Wednesday night voted to lower the limit for a driver's blood-alcohol content to 0.05 percent, down from 0.08 percent. The measure heads to Utah's governor, who has said he supports the legislation.

There is no data to prove that. Even at .08 there are data that show drivers are impaired. No reason to drink and drive. Take a taxi or have a designated driver
Nicely played
Precisely
Pilots can’t fly if they’ve had any alcohol the previous eight hours
.........well, I think you are 90% right! There are simply more efficient ways to accomplish a better result. In 2015, 16,484 people died in the US in an alcohol related accident. So, it’s a serious issue deserving of serious thought.
Millions of us just don’t go to restaurants any more. Imagine that impact on jobs and restaurant owners. What about the 11,493 killed where alcohol was not involved. A lot of them were killed due to tuning radios, using cell phones, looking at billboards, disciplining kids and on and on! Why not outlaw all that?! To eliminate all auto deaths, let’s just eliminate motor vehicles. Why stop there too, close all swimming pools, no more airlines and hospitals kill more than anything and so on.
One cure for drunks could be credit card type ignition. Think, current, modern, Hotel Key. If someone wants to drink past 2 or 3 drinks the restaurant disables his ignition for 24 hours and the drunk must then walk, catch a cab or call someone. If he/she doesn’t want to do that, the restaurant cuts them off.
Technology for this is already on the shelf. But, it will never happen because attorney’s and municipalities have created a multi billion dollar industry and they aren’t about to give it up!
Some freeper will say “What about people that come to the bar with no car?” They should have to sign an affidavit backed up with a current, valid, government, photo ID and if something happens it’s an automatic 90 day jail stay and that’s if no one is hurt.
It’s not a perfect system but neither is the current one!
Sounds like you live in an alternative world. Drug yourself??? I happen to enjoy a good wine when I am out to dinner. I like the complexity of flavors and am hardly drugging myself. Not am I too impaired to drive. You really ought to try getting a grip.
The comments here are very difficult to read. It’s the same with any thread on SS, Legalization of Marijuana, guns, .... Unfortunately people are pro liberty until they get or allowed to punish someone else. If given the opportunity to punish, control or restrict their neighbors personal liberty people of all stripes in this country say hell yeah, take that liberty with personal responsibility away for only I can be the gatekeeper of liberty for others.
Utah can do what they wish it’s their state but the issue with DUI in not .05 vs ,08 it’s repeat offenders way past both. It’s other drugs, prescribed and illegal, phones, eating, distractions of all types. But people here cheer the death of liberty one pet peeve at a time.
You beat me to it...
I hold a Class A CDL as well, and though I do occasionally drink and then drive, I always limit myself to a few drinks and give myself plenty of time to pass it all...
Not really a big deal...since I am a responsible mature adult.
I've rolled up to a few drunk drivers who turned their bodies into a meat sack plowing into poles and trees, so it's not hard to make that decision...
driving under the influence isn’t a crime, it’s a pre-crime.
Only tyrannys imprison citizens for pre-crimes
You sound like many of the "reformed alcoholics" I've had contact with through my involvement with Al-Anon (not AA). Yes, my life has been severely impacted by various alcoholics in my life but I'm not anti all alcohol. But your "law" would impact my being able to use my asthma inhaler and driving. My system would show an "alcohol level" without letting law enforcement know that I'm definitely NOT intoxicated or impaired. Should I have to be afraid to drive after taking a dose of my meds because people like you have instituted a 0.0 level in the system? Be sure not to get in the car after using mouthwash!
Yes “Drug Yourself” because that’s exactly what your doing. Might I add your doing it with the most widely abused drug in the US.
France is 0.05% for regular licenses and 0.02% for new drivers. Russia is 0.0356% although was 0% for a few years. Norway and Sweden are 0.02%.
Australia is 0.05% too.
Bingo!!! It is always about money and control, not always in that order. Same with tobacco, they got their 250 billion settlement for the “children and health care,” but that was not good enough either. If the damn thing is so bad you have to constantly raise taxes, make it illegal.

“Looks like I hit a nerve.”
Being a jerk usually does.
Not correct. The .04 limit is only applied when driving a commercial vehicle. I had a CDL for over 10 years until recently and know the law well. If a CDLer is driving a non-commercial vehicle then the .08 limit rules.
I would say that 90% of the people at .05% are impaired enough that they should not be driving.
Most Ignition Interlock devices are set at .03%. Based on expert analysis and ....a-HEM...experience that is about right.
