Daylight-saving time is dumb and we should get rid of it
Business Insider ^ | March 10, 2017 | Dave Mosher

Steel yourself: It's nearly time to turn our clocks forward an hour for the start of daylight-saving time (DST).

This arcane and terrible ritual officially starts on March 13, 2016.

At 1:59 a.m. on Sunday morning, our clocks will wind forward an hour to 3:00 a.m. instead of 2:00 a.m.

That gives us one less hour of sleep and means the sun will rise an hour later than we're used to.

If we do away with DST and the sun is bright at 4AM in my neck of the woods.Absolutely foolish!.

Keep DST...I like it.

I'm kind of surprised to see so many Freepers who really believe their lives are dictated by a stupid clock.

If you don't like DST, then ignore it.

Right. It’s kind of silly to see more and more of this tiresome crap in an era when clock time, time zones and schedules are becoming less and less relevant.

Then call it 7:42 AM or whatever damn time you want it to be -- and be done with it. LOL.

A single, worldwide time zone has been in place for many years in Aviation and other industries: it’s galled Zulu Time (military) or GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). All on a 24-hour clock.

Funny!

Yesterday there was a notice in an Opera group that I am part of that there would be a broadcast today at 1 PM of a program of interest from Europe. This morning I looked at a website (Operacast) that lists such things and they said that broadcast would begin at 2 PM, but they also said it would begin at 1800 GMT, so I knew Operacast was probably correct and the other folks were wrong.

Besides Daylight Savings Time can weaken Iowa schoolchildren's resistance to Communism! (See my post from yesterday about this.)

I agree, I hate DST! Pick one or the other and leave it alone!

I think that the point is — “make up your mind” — and not change. Spring forward permanently or Fall back permanently. But flip-flopping back and forth wipes out two months out of the year.

People are zombies for two months — which is how long it takes for my circadian clock to reset.

I wonder if there is increased incident car accidents and other problems during the time change months. I bet.

As bad as this is for adults it is worse for kids and down right horrible for kids with disabilities. This crap needs to change now. There is no reason to mess with the time We can all live without the change of time

I'm in AZ and I love not having to change clocks; it's much less disruptive. In the summer it is light by 5:30 am, so I automatically get up with the sun and go for a swim before it's 1000 degrees outside and the pool water is still cool. I still get to work at the same time, I just do more chores in the morning beforehand. In winter, I usually sleep until 7am, still get to work at the same time, and swim after work. While I am swimming in the dark, the pool is heated in wintertime, so who Cares? If we did DST here in the desert, it would be 100 degrees by 8 am and that would be awful.

Although I do like the idea of the Medieval "second sleep," where they went to bed so early in the winter that they would wake up after about 4 hours, putter around for 2 or 3 hours, then go back to bed.

My vote is for two sleeps!

Just think of the damage to global warming all the extra hours every year has caused.

Actually you can go to the local level.
There is ONE county in Indiana that is NOT on DST

I love the ritual of changing the clocks twice a year. I'm also looking very much forward to the extra day of daylight that will be gained during the summer months at the end of the day. Now (once the snow melts) I will be able to go out in my yard with a bottle of beer after work and toss a steak on the grill with the sunlight still shining upon me!

Also, spare me the stupid Indian saying about "white man thinks removing a yard of cloth on a blanket and sewing it on the other side thinks he is getting longer blanket." That is not a clever retort. Also, it doesn't even apply. Nobody is maintaining that we are gaining an hour of sunlight. We are simply taking an hour of it from the early morning when most people are either still in bed or on their way to work and putting it at the end of the day when more people can actually benefit from it. If it were up to me, Daylight Savings would be two hours instead of one so that during the warm months of June, July and August, we can sit in our yards or back decks until almost 10PM instead of being inside watching some silly TV program. Maybe we can come home from work and play volleyball outside with our kids for a few hours - get those bodies moving.

So I like the moving ahead of the clocks. In fact, I wish we did this every month. Instead of an hour twice a year, let's on the first of each month move the clocks ahead or behind by 10 minutes at a time depending on what time of year it is. That way, we are not disrupting anybody's sleep patterns significantly because we are only adjusting 10 minutes a month instead of a full hour at a time (or two hours if I had my way).

I’m against DST because it makes the birds start chirping an hour earlier.

How so? It will be darker an hour longer in the morning, so the birds should start chirping an hour later. And you get an extra hour of sleep!

“Why must we read this every March/November? “

Exactly!

Far better that the Gov’t should step in and squelch this idle chatter ...

Or better, mandate you jump forward 10 days of posting history so you are not subject to this outrage. It would save electrons too.
