Sessions answered the questions he was asked honestly. He wasn't asked if he had ever met any Russian in 2016. Trey Gowdy says that everyone who testifies before Congress gets some detail wrong, but that doesn't mean they are lying.

It appears that the Obama administration set up the meeting with the Russian ambassador. The ambassador asked Sessions for a meeting and Sessions had no idea why. Considering that Sessions was merely a "surrogate" (that is, made some speeches supporting Trump), not part of the campaign operation, and given that there were 2 or 3 others in the room, it wouldn't have occurred to Sessions to talk campaign tactics with the ambassador even if there was collusion going on (which there wasn't)...so there was no reason why he would have thought that meeting in his office had any relation to what Al Franken questioned him about.
