He COULD have done so...after REFUSING to have Sessions recuse himself, and appearing WITH Sessions to denounce the charges and NAME NAMES, announce firings and investigations for leaks.
But he decided to surrender instead. Now NOTHING Sessions does will be given ANY legitimacy. And Obama holdovers can run roughshod over them with one fake, meaningless leak after another.

All President Trump needs to do is to appoint a special prosecutor with broad powers to investigate any communications, during the campaign season, between elected or appointed officials at the U.S. Fed level and the Russian diplomatic team (or any other high-level Ruskie).

Sir, there are going to be mistakes. I'm just don't see any cause for trepidation.
I feel that the administration handled this situation about as well as could be expected, if not perfectly, and I'd like to hear exactly what you think should have been done differently.
Saying that I believe there's been some overreaction on our side doesn't mean I'm in the "Amen chorus". I'm in neither the overreacting nor the Amen chorus, actually.
I think the administration's response was eminently adequate, and until I hear more about this unspecified "optimal" response that you appear to be chasing, I'm satisfied with it...
Timing is everything.
Flynn's stuff happened as the Senate democrats were obstructing cabinet picks. It's an important position but not so important that you will let it delay the rest of your cabinet. Plus, I assume there was something else probably the misleading of the Vice President but there was probably other little things that we are unaware of.
The attorney general is one of the more important cabinet positions. If you let your opposition pick him off for a stupid semantic misunderstanding then you may as well fire your whole cabinet now and go it alone. Because they will come after them for J-walking if they think it will get them fired.
Finally at some point if you let the Democrats get away with this crap you will never be able to get anyone to accept a position in your cabinet. Why would I take a pay cut to be insulted, threatened and trashed for trying to serve my country? So the President needs to nip this BS in the butt now.
