Sessions Under Fire: GOP Rushes to Eat Their Own Again

Some congressional Republicans were quick to agree Thursday with Democrats calling for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election, following leaks and media reports that Sessions met with Moscow’s ambassador twice last year.

During a town hall with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on CNN Wednesday evening, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) said that if Sessions had spoken with the Russian ambassador, “then for sure you need a special prosecutor.”

Graham did later call demands for Sessions' resignation "crazy" in a series of Thursday tweets, but added "Sessions needs to explain his contacts with the Russian ambassador during his service as a Senator - that’s appropriate."

"AG Sessions should clarify his testimony and recuse himself," House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) tweeted early on Thursday.

"I think, the trust of the American people, you recuse yourself in these situations," House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Thursday morning.

McCarthy, in a later appearance on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" backtracked and said he wasn't calling on Sessions to recuse himself.

"I'm not calling on [Sessions] to recuse himself," McCarthy said. "It's amazing how people spin things so quickly."

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) joined in during an appearance on NPR on Thursday morning. "It is potentially the case that there is going to be Justice Department recommendations or referrals based on anything regarding the campaign, he said. "Depending on what more we learn about these meetings, it could very well be that the attorney general, in the interest of fairness and in his best interest, should potentially ask someone else to step in and play that role."

During a CNN town hall on Wednesday night, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Sessions couldn't be trusted to investigate..

Sessions just pulled a boehner move. I’m so sick of the spineless GOP establishment. Actually, I’ve been done with them... I had hope Trump would’ve cleaned house by now.

And Judge Napolitano convicted Sessions of "misleading Congress" shortly after the announcement. Sessions is done.

Whoa there pardner! You have done the investigation, arrested Sessions, and convicted him before a single shred of evidence has been shown. You might want to pull back on the Jim Beam a little.

Sessions should appoint special prosecutors; for Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the IRS scandal, Hillary’s server, the Clinton foundation, and now the multi-billion political slush fund at DOJ. Maybe this will push Sessions to do so.

Nothing would grow gonads on Republicans. Sessions will not do it and the corrupt weak Republicans would never start the ball rolling. Republicans are wimps, not worth a damn. I'm really pissed at my party.

Don’t bitch at me. Take your complaints to the weak sisters in the GOP and the Media - especially Fox News.

I don't think most Freepers even know how the system works.

By recusing himself from any potential investigations of the 2016 election, Sessions has immediately taken himself out of the story.

This tells me that there aren't going to be any investigations at all.

Bingo! Thank you.

The Democraps got nothing, absolutely nothing, from this hit job. AG Sessions was already going to recuse himself from an investigation (one that doesn't even exist, by the way, because there is simply no basis for it. Or has everyone suddenly forgotten that small fact?)

There will be no special prosecutor. The notion that there could be is the result of wishful thinking on the Democrat side, and the result of hysterics driven by insecurity on our side.

The Establishment and Media (but I repeat myself) are flailing desperately, and there's simply no there there. They are impotent, and they will continue to be impotent. Indeed, they are in their death throes.

I can't believe so many Freepers are allowing themselves to be manipulated by fake news, but that's exactly what is happening. This smear is just as empty as the last one was, and as the next one will be. Unless there is truly some wrongdoing somewhere (and there isn't), the President will emerge from this foolishness even stronger than before. All you nervous nellies need to put your crack pipes down, because it's making you paranoid. Have a beer and chillax...

The weak sisters here have plagued us since the moment Trump entered the campaign. Since then, they have declared “all is lost” at least a thousand times. They are truly embarrassing.

Very disappointed today.

We have the strongest political position that conservatives have had in this nation in over 100 years, and we are getting the shit kicked out of us by the lunatic left and fake news world.

Sessions was a total flop today, how incredibly embarassing. If you aren’t going to lead with authority, you are going to be eaten alive.

But, you can’t fire Sessions now, or have him resign. You’re STUCK with him. Cutting Flynn loose, was a mistake, because you only get one of those...

Right now, Trump needs to take charge AGAIN.

Trump needs to go on national TV and explain to the American People how silly, absurd, and STUPID this notion that Russians changed people’s votes. Make a joke of it, a mockery, make anyone that suggests that look like a partisan retarded hack.

Nip this shit in the bud for God’s sake!

Trump is a political figure. Sessions is a lawyer with professional responsibilities that dictate his course of action while he is in office. We obviously didn’t watch the same press conference because I distinctly heard Sessions explain that.

Senate is supposed to confirm the deputy AG next week, of course they will try to prolong it to keep their girl in there. Mitch needs to get things rolling in the Senate.

You're right about that. I got publicly spanked by JR himself. I was a regular contributor before that.

Democrats will take down each and every Trump pick, if you do not tell them NO!

No is a complete sentence.

Called Chaffetz’ office today....what’s wrong with him?? Here we go again...Republicans bashing each other and giving ammo to Dems so they can walk on Republicans...again. Enough! Also called RNC and emailed McConnell’s office. PLZ stand up and stop calling for ‘recusals’, investigations, etc. of other Republicans! We have critical issues to deal with and the Russian fiasco should not be at top of list.

he understands the big picture, and will not reward the enemy with Session’s resignation.

At least not yet. Same was said of Flynn then they concocted tha B$ cover story that he lied to the VP.

Sessions should have know that after they repeatedly asked that no one in the Trump party had any conversation with the Russians, that they had those conversations. I was pretty sure they did because they of the way they kept wording the questions as perjury traps.
