Some congressional Republicans were quick to agree Thursday with Democrats calling for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election, following leaks and media reports that Sessions met with Moscows ambassador twice last year.
During a town hall with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on CNN Wednesday evening, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) said that if Sessions had spoken with the Russian ambassador, then for sure you need a special prosecutor.
Graham did later call demands for Sessions' resignation "crazy" in a series of Thursday tweets, but added "Sessions needs to explain his contacts with the Russian ambassador during his service as a Senator - thats appropriate."
"AG Sessions should clarify his testimony and recuse himself," House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) tweeted early on Thursday.
"I think, the trust of the American people, you recuse yourself in these situations," House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Thursday morning.
McCarthy, in a later appearance on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" backtracked and said he wasn't calling on Sessions to recuse himself.
"I'm not calling on [Sessions] to recuse himself," McCarthy said. "It's amazing how people spin things so quickly."
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) joined in during an appearance on NPR on Thursday morning. "It is potentially the case that there is going to be Justice Department recommendations or referrals based on anything regarding the campaign, he said. "Depending on what more we learn about these meetings, it could very well be that the attorney general, in the interest of fairness and in his best interest, should potentially ask someone else to step in and play that role."
During a CNN town hall on Wednesday night, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Sessions couldn't be trusted to investigate..

Right. Your average Freeper knows more about the political machinations of this country than Donald Trump does.
No wonder these FreeRepublic fundraisers never end. This place is being taken over by morons.
As well as for the three Muslims who were aides to Democrats and recently fired. It’s time to play war with these people.
Dems couldn't stop him from being confirmed, so now they are drumming up Fake Charges to try and get him to resign.
I wonder the same thing. It’s like every pearl-clutching know-it-all on the Internet ended up on Free Republic. Wasn’t always this way.
I agree with you about Sessions’ response, but if he goes down, the sharks will come after Bannon and then Kellyanne. In no time, the administration would resemble Reagan’s second term disaster full of apparatchiks like James and Howard Baker. We all know how that turned out, Iran-Contra and Anthony Kennedy.
Which Obama holdovers in the U.S. Justice Department are going to set up an investigation of any kind?
Please. I’m not in the mood to argue. Time will tell which one of us is right. If Sessions continues to command Trump’s support and weathers this ridiculous tempest in a teapot, look for a post from me. It will chide you re your negativism and inability to predict outcomes.
I’m not worried about you having the opportunity to do the same to me. Trump will never abandon Sessions, and with Trump’s support the AG is going nowhere.
And now even most of those who are left recognize that the guy was just an @sshole anyway.
As Donald Trump might say ... "It's really sad."
Rather interesting how the same idiots calling for President Trump to pull out of the election after pu***gate now want Sessions to capitulate. Screw them.

They won’t be. This is the same stuff they did to Nixon, Reagan, and W. We have to start fighting back now. Attack the media as pure Democratic operatives. Remind the people that this occurs in every Republican administration and that Democrats can break the law, take the fifth, and be held in contempt with absolute impunity from consequences or the Democrat loving press.
Yuge.
“Even money now we get a special prosecutor. The Obama leftovers in the Justice Department will set this up”
Right, actually I think the SP is a lock now. Even if it is a “neutral” the staff will be rat holdovers. It’s going to be a death by a thousand cuts. Leaks, half truths innuendos
from here on out. If I’m wrong and there is no SP that could be worse because it will fall to the rat holdovers at Justice. I do not think Trump realizes the countries greatest threat is a within a few miles of the White House.
During all the hysterics surrounding the post-election recounts last year, I was embarrassed by the wacky conspiracy theories posted here on FreeRepublic all day long.
An SP is impossible, the law expired.
The Obama holdovers are scheduled to be replaced Tuesday.
It’s the same people doing the whining today. The sky is falling!
Fast & Furious (Holder lied under oath, gave guns to drug cartels)
Paid random to Iran
But if you watch fake news, wouldn’t know this!
‘Ive been out of pocket but last I heard, President Trump was standing 100% behind AG Sessions. Thats what counts.’

People think Trump is a moron, who will give the hysterical jackals any scalp they want. Sessions is not Flynn; the latter created his own problems. Sessions is a principled man of integrity, and Trump has his back.
As soon as Sessions stated as his press conference that he had consulted the Justice Department ethics advisors about the matter, I knew he was going to recuse himself.
As soon as he asked them about it, he knew what their response was going to be.
The GOP just gave their lunch money to the bully.
