Students aim to make feminine hygiene products more accessible on campus (James Madison University)
The Breeze (JMU Student Paper) ^ | March 2, 2017 | by Anthea Liu

Despite calendars or tracking apps, sometimes mother nature has other plans in mind. Students can get their period and be without necessary products. Instead of just texting friends for tampons, one JMU student is fighting for accessibility.

Just like the majority of JMU’s female students who experience this situation, Magi Linscott must endure a week of unpleasantness every month — her period. As a member of the female community at JMU, Linscott understands how it feels when there’s an urgent need for menstrual supplies, but they aren’t always readily available.

“Every girl has ruined a chair at least once in their life, or they’re going to ruin a chair,” said Linscott, a public policy and administration and writing, rhetoric and technical communication double major.

Linscott is the initiator of the “Free the Tampon” advocacy. This advocacy is aimed at making menstrual hygiene products more accessible and free across JMU’s campus.

“There is this weird trend of period shaming and, like, this stigma around periods in general, which to me makes absolutely no sense,” Linscott said. “It’s a basic biological process that I don’t think anyone should be ashamed about.”

Linscott noticed that there’s a lack of accessibility to menstrual products on campus, and although there are a couple places that sell them on campus, the prices can be pretty high.

How stupid is this? Aren’t there women’s restrooms on campus with machines for pads/tampons in them? you mean these gals can’t carry a quarter around with them for emergency supplies? Why do they have to be free? Sigh...the stupidity of this generation knows no bounds...

So they want some of that “Free Sh&t” odoumbo was handing out before he got ejected.

By the time said females get into college, one would think they should be well versed on when their monthly cycle would roll around, they’re no longer childrern. It seems someone with an ounce of common sense would be preparing AHEAD of time for when that cycle begins. Expecting the school to pay for their feminine products should then be added to their tuition fees AHEAD of time. Like the Boy Scouts used to say, “BE PREPARED”.

Sad.
Be prepared, it’s not that difficult.

And by the way I have never ruined a chair (or anything else) from being unprepared.

These women are such babies. What did their mothers and grandmothers and female ancestors going back millions of years do? Whine and complain about being women and their period? Highly unlikely.

How have these girls survived this long? A sensible woman carries sanitary supplies with her at all times. Get a purse, you dingbat.

I think it’s an example of discrimination.

There should be free depends for each university attendee...

That’s one good reason women, at least old-fashioned ones like me, carried a purse. You carry your own “supplies” in the event you are ever surprised (and surprises do happen on occasion). I ‘carried’ ALL the time. I have never, ever, not once, had to try to find anything in a bathroom.

Nowadays, most kids in high school/college have backpacks. They have enough room in those things to carry enough ‘supplies’ to get them through a couple of months. Not only that, but ‘supplies’ these days (not so much when I was growing up) are made so that they are very convenient to carry ... small, wrapped, etc.

Did she put it on/in at the table? Seems to me that would be tricky without causing a stir.

Those vending machines are a rarity nowadays. You hardly ever see them.

They used to be everywhere, but even then you couldn’t depend on them to be stocked or not malfunction.

Best to be prepared yourself. It’s really not that difficult.

“Every girl has ruined a chair at least once in their life,”

Hmmm, I clearly have been the victim of horrific discrimination. I managed to make it through my teenaged years, adult womanhood, and all the way through menopause and have NEVER experienced the much-vaunted ruined chair. I demand the opportunity to ruin a chair!! I need reparations!!

I agree with you. Here are two stories.

First, let me set the stage of where I am coming from. I do not own a smart phone and I hate how most people are wed to their stupid phones. Take my sister's family, they cannot survive without touching base every half hour. Ick! About three years ago my sister and I were driving back to Ft. Lauderdale from Gainesville. I was complaining how she was always in contact with her kids for stupid things. She got mad at me. In the middle of our conversation, the stupid phone rang. It was her son in their house in Ft. Lauderdale asking her where Dad was in their house in Ft. Lauderdale. Their house is 2,200 sq. ft..

Another example: This past New Year, both by niece and nephew went to a New Year's Party at private house. When they entered, everyone had their head down texting on their stupid phones. Fun Party! NOT!

How about not talking about those items? How about not acting as if a woman’s physiology is a form of oppression forced on her by those evil males who don’t have the same issues?

Will they demand the items not be subject to sales tax because men don’t use them? Will they make male students pay for them because men are the evil oppressors?

All madness, as most everything else that comes out of academia.

Let a man ask an idiot question. Do women’s rest rooms on a college campus have tampons/pads available in them, either free or to purchase?

Where else should these products be? Are they saying that possibly all classrooms should have them available?

I wonder what the Modern Women would do say before WWI when Kotex wasn't invented. In those days the term was menstrual rag, such as Lizzy Borden described the bloody rags soaking in a bucket after she went up and down stairs hacking, singing a rag time tune.

Did they all get together several months before a serious social event so that their periods meshed or were there other thing that I haven't read about.

What stuff did they carry in the early 1900’s.

I propose that we reestablish the communal menstrual hut, as existed in more civilized times, where women can gather together and scream there hatred of man over wine, a good vintage, with appropriate condiment's.

On a date long ago, all dressed up and at a nice restaurant ...

*****************************************

Question ... why didn’t she go into the ladies room & get one herself & then she could avail herself of it at the same time as well? Without getting too deep into the weeds, maybe she was afraid to stand up, but what did she do when you gave it to her .... put it on while sitting at the table?

You're quite right, it was tricky and rather awkward. But she managed, and it saved her from the embarrassment likely to have occurred had she stood up. It held for the rest of the meal and exit to the car, where it was... replaced with a fresh one... Your imagination can surely fill in the details I've left out. :-)

Correct on both counts. See answer #56 above.

Been there done that more than once (afraid to stand up), but she’s one up on me, getting it on at the table. Whew.
