Donald Trump Calls for Huge ‘Merit Based’ Immigration Reform
Breitbart ^ | March 1, 2017 | Neil Munro

Posted on 03/01/2017 9:35:55 AM PST by COUNTrecount

President Donald Trump called for a huge overhaul of the nation’s immigration rules to reduce the huge inflow of low-skill, welfare-dependent immigrants, but perhaps also to increase the inflow of productivity-boosting white-collar immigrants.

In his Feb. 28 speech to the joint session of Congress, he declared:

Nations around the world, like Canada, Australia and many others –- have a merit-based immigration system. It is a basic principle that those seeking to enter a country ought to be able to support themselves financially. Yet, in America, we do not enforce this rule, straining the very public resources that our poorest citizens rely upon. According to the National Academy of Sciences, our current immigration system costs America’s taxpayers many billions of dollars a year.

Switching away from this current system of lower-skilled immigration, and instead adopting a merit-based system, will have many benefits: it will save countless dollars, raise workers’ wages, and help struggling families –- including immigrant families –- enter the middle class.

I believe that real and positive immigration reform is possible, as long as we focus on the following goals: to improve jobs and wages for Americans, to strengthen our nation’s security, and to restore respect for our laws.

Trump’s proposed shift to “a merit-based immigration system” would reduce the inflow of unskilled migrants, but perhaps also raise the inflow of skilled migrants.

Two GOP Senators are also proposing a reduction in low-skill immigration and a rise in high-skilled immigration.

Any policy shift to reduce l0w-skilled migration would likely be opposed by Democrats, by Wall Street investors and by the many member companies in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, all of whom gain from the huge annual inflow of roughly 800,000 salary-cutting, welfare-spending unskilled migrants.

It is called ‘value-added’ and it really is the only sane immigration standard. If you cannot contribute, you cannot come, period. Deal with it, Muslim refugees.

Dammit Trump! No More H1B job-killing, wage-killing, work-hour-when-you-have-a-job exploding immigrants!!!

The massive flooding of the engineering markets with cheap (and bad) labor from India has KILLED MY CAREER.

I thought bringing in Jeff Sessions would lead to action on this front! It’s a huge part of why I voted for Trump!

Great!

Congress can simply overturn the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965.

When I was a kid my father had a job offer in Australia. In order to emigrate there you had to prove you’d be able to support yourself and had a job. And the job had to be one that the Australian government was willing to accept an immigrant to fill. I don’t know what it’s like today but back in the 60’s you couldn’t just pick up and move Down Under because you felt entitled to do so. I don’t see why we shouldn’t do that here...at a minimum.

H-1B is merit based and killing domestic STEM careers. This idea sucks bigly. The default position seems the the USA, current population 330 million, desperately need immigrants. That is a joke. This mindset has to change.

The RAISE Act being proposed by Sen. Tom Cotton is exactly the kind of immigration reform we need.
Reducing legal immigration and restricting it to people who will be an asset to the nation.

The Rubio, McCain, Graham, Flake type, amnesty for illegal aliens, represents only the Chamber of Commerce and not the citizens.

Every Senator that voted for the Gang of Amnesty bill needs to be Cantorized. Flake, Heller, Hatch and Corker are up in 2018.
Graham and Alexander in 2020.
McCain, Murkowsky, Hoeven and Rubio have to wait until 2022 because their voters rewarded them with another term after their treasonous vote for amnesty.

Why should taxpayers subsidize cheap labor for those who hire illegals by having to pay for their food stamps, rent subsidies, schooling for their children, criminal investigations and incarceration? Let those employers who hire illegal aliens pay them enough to take care of them and their families and don’t expect taxpayers to foot those bills.

That is the way it used to be. In order to come to this country back in the day, you had to either have a sponser, or proof that you had a job and would not become a drag on the people of this country.

You also had to be healthy, have papers, and were determined to become an American citizen of the USA.

No, if there are Americans to fill the jobs, then H1B visas are not issued.

• Mexico welcomes only foreigners who will be useful to Mexican society:
– Foreigners are admitted into Mexico “according to their possibilities of contributing to national progress.” (Article 32)
– Immigration officials must “ensure” that “immigrants will be useful elements for the country and that they have the necessary funds for their sustenance” and for their dependents. (Article 34)
– Foreigners may be barred from the country if their presence upsets “the equilibrium of the national demographics,” when foreigners are deemed detrimental to “economic or national interests,” when they do not behave like good citizens in their own country, when they have broken Mexican laws, and when “they are not found to be physically or mentally healthy.” (Article 37)
– The Secretary of Governance may “suspend or prohibit the admission of foreigners when he determines it to be in the national interest.” (Article 38)

No. We have far too many unemployed software engineers, for example, as it is. Indian software engineers aren’t better in any way, and are provably worse in some ways.

The USA mindlessly issues 65,000 H-1B visas every year, like clock work.

H-1B generates anger because it was abused to deliberately drive down wages. If the numbers were reduced to reasonable levels, it wouldn’t be controversial.

No, if there are Americans to fill the jobs, then H1B visas are not issued.

There are many, many ways to get around that. I learned all about that in 2002, when I and many other American IT workers were laid off during the 2002 IT slump and over a quarter-million H1-B visas were still issued.
