Boston Dynamics unveils 'nightmare-inducing' hybrid robot (video)

Google-owned robotics firm and “nightmare” factory Boston Dynamics has released video of its latest creation: a two-wheeled, four-legged hybrid robot named Handle.

The robot can stand on four legs, like Boston Dynamics’ previous creations such as BigDog and Spot. But at the end of its back two legs are two stabilised wheels, which let it stand up vertically and roll around at speeds of up to nine miles per hour. Think “Terminator riding on a hoverboard” and you’ll have a pretty good idea of the impression Handle gives off.

Boston Dynamics says the reason for the hybrid design is the simplicity it affords: rather than needing the complex joints of the fully-quadrupedal bots, Handle’s wheels can speed it around with little difficulty, while its front legs can be used for balance and for carrying loads of up to 50kg.

“Handle uses many of the same dynamics, balance and mobile manipulation principles found in the quadruped and biped robots we build,” Boston Dynamics said, “but with only about 10 actuated joints, it is significantly less complex. Wheels are efficient on flat surfaces while legs can go almost anywhere: by combining wheels and legs, Handle can have the best of both worlds.” The video does not, however, show Handle walking rather that scooting around on its wheels.

"Weird stuff, that DNA."

Oh, my. You have no idea.

In all the pages and pages of data, there are only a few significant bits that get shuffled around to manipulate what we see as massive differences.

Eventually, we'll have the codes pretty well mapped out. We already have the ability to write any particular sequence we want, but we're in the position of the million monkeys typing on the million typewriters as far as being actually creative with it.

Once we can actually pick and choose certain variables, however, that's when the real mayhem will start.

Thanks, I had half a golf ball of bone on the back of the foot removed.
Up to six weeks off of the feet, then boot until 3 months pass

What if the challenge is issued by a particularly threatening alarm clock or coffeemaker?

Hi. I was lying down. Then I began to feel cold, so I said to myself, “Self, the last time you felt like this, some teenager had turned the thermostat down to Freeze Your Knees!” So I got up and found, indeed, that said teenager had done that thing again.

It’s quite dark here, and DP is going on about lightning and so forth. It seems probable that swim team practice will be called off again, but they haven’t done it yet. Hoping against hope, probably.

Very interesting news about your niece!

I’ve done as much as I can for one day; I’ve shredded about two reams of paper (seems the shredder was just overheated the other day) and found lots of files that I need to label and put in hanging files.

I also found quite a few 5-generation sheets, so I may be able to reconstruct my genealogy for my brother, since all I need is his birth year. I’ll see. It would consist of almost two reams of paper, and I don’t think I have that much. I just really need to get into the laptop with the genealogy on it.

For some reason, I’ve duplicated about four different files, and looking at the print dates on them, I can only chalk it up to CFIDS being alive and well. This is going to end up being about two week job. Or longer.

For now, I’m going to call it a day and go get parallel to the deck. See all y’all tomorry.

My wife plays shredder in our family.

Twice a year for 3-4 hours.

Like a spring cleaning ritual.

May you rest fully to the ability of outdoing any of Bob’s machines

My machines?

The only machines I’ve had any luck with are the fictional machines I’ve developed in my stories.

And even those constitute a rather grim cautionary tale.

Good luck with that! Not that water parks aren’t a lot of fun, but not when one can’t even walk.

Speaking of water parks, that what it looks outside my door after three days of nearly continuous rain. We’re going to boat off to the gym. The swim team hasn’t called off practice, yet, but the first sound of thunder after 5:00 p.m. will do it.

I’ll go into the lazy river if I can take a few steps.

I have a tenth anniversary in August and I expect to swim minus a lot of effort on one foot to do some snorkling as well.

I can float well. Once in water I can protect the foot.

Here in CA we wish we had some more inches of rain still.

We had gotten so much water we have a lot to catch fire in August unless we get lucky with some occasional rain.

"What if the challenge is issued by a particularly threatening alarm clock or coffeemaker?"

I am at a stage where neither such device is even meaningful.

Drink the coffee, if Darksheare made it!!!

Why would anyone willingly drink the sparkplug from the second stage of a Hydrogen Bomb?

Well, it has a bit of a kick to it, but it’s a great pick-me-up. Bruce Banner swears by it.
