The Democratic mayor of Philadelphia is touting the success of the citys beverage tax and lashing out at the greed of retailers as sales crater by as much as 50 percent.
City officials say the unpopular soda tax is already exceeding expectations, raking in $5.7 million in revenue in January. The revenue is more than double what officials estimated, which goes towards early childhood education programs in the city. Despite the supposed success of the policy, sales among retailers are getting crushed. Stores are reporting beverage sales down 30 to 50 percent and are planning layoffs to cope with the costs, reports CBS News.
The announcements from multiple stores of impending layoffs is provoking the ire of Mayor Jim Kenney, who appears confused why businesses are not choosing to eat the added costs. Kenney views product price hikes and layoffs due to the tax as a choice by businesses to punish the city and its residents for the policy.
I didnt think it was possible for the soda industry to be any greedier, Kenney told Philly.com Tuesday. They are so committed to stopping this tax from spreading to other cities, that they are not only passing the tax they should be paying onto their customer, they are actually willing to threaten working men and womens jobs rather than marginally reduce their seven figure bonuses.

It’s known as “profits”...Capitalism is business PROFIT, you dipsh!t....
When and where do you draw the line on whether a tax should be legal or meets the definition of theft perpetrated by the government? There need to be some guidelines.
A greedy politician looking to take more money from the people to spend on his henchmen in the teachers’ union and build his empire, blaming the greedy soda industry and small businessmen - to say Kenny is an imbecile is to insult imbeciles.......
Is it better than government should tax other things to finance the criminalization of the carcinogens tobacco and marijuana, or that they should be legal for adults? I say the latter.
I bet the sugar addicts have found another way to get their fix.
Re: The revenue is more than double what officials estimated, which goes towards early childhood education programs in the city.
I will bet anyone that kids won’t get even an ounce thinner.
Those people losing their jobs shouldn’t complain. After all, it’s for the children.....that they can’t support because they lost their jobs...
LOL.......”Venezuela Solution”......good one.
OBAMA, MEET YOUR SOUL MATE, MAYOR KENNY:
"Mayor Kenney views product price hikes and layoffs due to the tax as
a choice by businesses to punish the city and residents for the policy."
Chicago has a soda tax. I wonder what the result will be but the Chicago media is
ultra liberal. No truth.
Any and all types of government nut crunching is success to these goons.
An excellent example of (political) target fixation.
Hmmm. Sales down, tax income up? Kenny’s sanctuary city sounds like part of a money laundering operation for the cartels.
Never live in the big city.
Mark
he is not dumb.
he is playing dumb.
he knows taxes are passed down to consumers.
the meme he is pushing is to get’people to believe this normal business practice is a form of greed by the business.
it is a socialist redefine. call them on it.
The people are just shopping across the bridge in New Jersey.
Don’t know bout PA, but in TN businesses are REQUIRED to pass sales tax on to consumers.
No he's not confused. The purpose of the tax, the STATED purpose of the tax, was to get revenue for the city. They made no effort to lie about wanting to assist public health or help people stop drinking sugary drinks. So at least he wasn't lying about it like every other mayor that does this.
