The Chicago Police Department conducted a series of overnight raids from Thursday into Friday that resulted in 81 arrests, mostly for drug- and weapons-related offenses, Supt. Eddie Johnson said Friday.
The raids, focused on the city's South and West Side neighborhoods, were "focused on the underlying source of crime in these areas: the sale of narcotics," Johnson said at a press conference Friday afternoon.
Of the 81 people arrested, Johnson said 61 are previously convicted felons, 49 are documented gang members, 19 have previously been arrested on gun charges, 14 are currently on parole, and 65 have been previously identified by police to be at a higher risk to be a victim or offender of gun violence.
"There are repeat gun offenders that one, don't care they're on parole, two, don't care about the fact they're already previously convicted felons," Johnson said.
Police are still looking for 40 people targeted in the raids, and said another raid in the coming weeks will have federal assistance.

And no one can argue about the seriousness although Democrats in those cities would like change the subject and for the nation to not notice... and talk about transgendenderism.
Besides, this is exactly how and where minorities are neglected and the ills of the inner cities will never improve and it has absolutely nothing to do with racism.
I wonder if they picked up Leroy Brown.
King Long was relieved.
Bad guys with guns in Chiraq....but, they have laws against that. Didn’t they know?? /sacr
No way...he's dead! Croce sang about it!
King Long is my stage name.
It looks like a war zone. I know, my commuter train goes through it every workday. I should take video of it next week and post it here on FR. Seriously, it looks like a bombed out war zone........
I'm familiar with those parts of Chicago so I can answer pretty comfortably saying ZERO.
Those are 90 percent or more black neighborhoods.
The parts of the city that these raids occurred in are predominantly black, to the tune of 90% or more.
If they were going to target illegal alien gang members the Chicago PD would have to go further south into the Pilsen neighborhood. Western Suburbs of Cicero are also predominantly latino gangs and many of them would be here illegally. There are documented ties to latino gangs in Cicero with MS-113 and drug traffic.
Cicero is out of Chicago PD's jurisdiction and since Cicero is mostly latino run now, the chances of Cicero PD busting up the latino gangs is pretty small. That's going to require Federal intervention also to accomplish.
Grew up there first 20 years of my life.
I heard he was meaner than a junkyard dog.
What is a “weapons offense”, and how does it square with the second amendment?
If you shouldn’t be armed, you shouldn’t be running around loose. You should be dead or in prison.
+1
The bad guys are running the show in Chicago. These raids/busts are feel good moves to placate the ignorant public, in a few days their aldermen will have them all back on the street. Business as usual.
Keep this up and the Chicago murder rate will go down.
Rahm is feeling the heat from allowing Chicago to become a murder capital...Trump lit the match.
I think the US attorney will finally begin Federal prosecution of felons in possession of a firearm. Most of these are slam dunk cases: if they have already been convicted on state charges of having the firearm, that’s prima facie evidence in Federal court. All there is for the PD to do is try to negotiate the sentence: minimum 5 years in a Federal maximum security lockup, far from their homies in Illinois.
What is a drug offense, and how does it square with the tenth amendment?
What is a drug offense, and how does it square with the tenth amendment?
Drug offenses can be state offenses. If we could get all states on the same page maybe the feds would stop violating the tenth.
