Fauxahontas Proposes an IRS Takeover of Tax Preparation

The yearly ritual of submitting tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) may not be something most of us look forward to doing, but do we really want the federal government to do it for us?

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has proposed legislation that would require the IRS to offer you the convenience of doing your taxes for you. The actual bill would require the IRS to create programs that help taxpayers process and file their federal taxes for free. Sen. Warren says taxpayers spend, on average, 13 hours and about $200 for tax preparation services to file their tax returns. Of course, this is unnecessary (if not misleading), as there are plenty of free services available to most Americans.

Having the IRS take over the process of filing our tax returns is not an idea that will make America great again. Our tax system is based on the concept of voluntary compliance, and hollowing this out by replacing it with a government-run tax preparation system moves the IRS from a tax administration, collection, and enforcement agency on to giving “advice” to the people it’s taking money from -- a clear conflict of interest.

How long before such "advice" becomes mandatory?

Can American taxpayers trust the same government agency that wants as much of their money as possible to also decide which benefits and deductions they will receive? Even if such a system were convenient and free, would we really want it?

How about just simply tax assessments to the point at which record-keeping and “preparation” of forms is a very simple matter?

The only way this would work is by getting rid of most of the social engineering tricks. Your employer would report your income, your banks and investment companies would report you earnings and you are done. No deductions for charities. No credits for upgrading your windows or insulation. No special credits for teachers spending some of their own money for their classes. Just how much did you make, how many dependents do you have and here is your tax bill.

I would love that simplification. I wonder if she realizes howuch power that would remove from her Congressional tribe?

Libs already tried this. Obama wanted to license everyone who prepares a tax return for anyone other than themselves. IIRC the courts stopped him. Now Fakeajawea wants the same thing, probably by congressional law.

I’ve got a better idea for you Liarwatha, simplify the tax code so anyone can prepare their own return and maybe we won’t need the IRS or tax preparers/tax lawyers/EAs or any other special help.

She should just write a bill that makes all employers send your income to the state first then to the Feds so they can all just take out what they want before they send what’s left back to you. That would save money too.

I heard an interesting interview with the founder of H&R Block who said that the IRS used to prepare taxes a long time ago and the opportunity for his company came when the IRS decided to get out of this field.

During the year I filed away tax related documents. I usually had them all by the end of January.

I had a standard meeting with my tax prepare the first Saturday in February. In at 10 am out no later than 10:30 and most of that time was just visiting.

I am sure there are some tax returns that are complicated but I can not believe it takes on average 13 hours and you can get the taxes prepared for a lot less than $200.

This is just a way to add more people to the government’s teat.

eliminate the income tax! if feds need revenue they can come up with another kind of tax that is SIMPLE EASY and EFFICIENT
....make it so simple that there is NO ROOM for cheating by the taxpayers or intimidation/threats of citizens by the politicians

Did anyone see the photo of Trump with his tax returns? The notion that a government employee could do that is absurd. And it's almost just as absurd to think that the government could prepare tax returns for anyone in business for himself, at least with anything resembling the current law.

I have a better idea. Do away with the IRS, withholding, deductions, the death tax and taxes on investment income; institute a flat tax on wages and tips; and implement a 1040 (same form for everyone) that really will fit on a postcard.
