Sen. John McCain slammed President Donald Trump's attacks on the media this week by noting dictators "get started by suppressing free press."
It was a startling observation from a sitting member of Congress against the President of the United States, especially considering McCain is a member of Trump's party.
"I hate the press," the Arizona Republican sarcastically told NBC News' Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press." "I hate you especially. But the fact is we need you. We need a free press. We must have it. It's vital."

Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) ripped fellow Republican Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) on Sunday after McCain criticized President Trumps escalating war of words with the media.
He argued that the nation is very lucky that Trump is president and not McCain, who won the 2008 GOP nomination but lost to Barack Obama in the general election.
Paul argued that McCain has a history of being wrong major foreign policy questions.
I would say John McCains been wrong on just about everything over the last four decades. He advocated for the Iraq War, which I think destabilized the Middle East, he said.
If you look at the map, theres probably at least six different countries where John McCain has advocated for us having boots on the ground, he added.

He’s right. That’s exactly what started happening during the Clinton’s reign and reached it’s highest level, so far, during Obama’s reign.
Yet another fake news story?
I have yet to hear anyone in the administration coming out and saying the press needs to be shut down.
They HAVE complained about dishonest coverage, which is appropriate.
My guess is McCain got asked a question about limiting the press and it’s the press using his gullible response as part of a story.
Oh STFU McCain. In no way is he suppressing free speech.
McClown and Pelosi are taking turns on who can come up with the most clueless soundbites.
A biased press is no better than a biased judge.
At least a good judge would recuse himself whenever there is an appearance of conflict.
When the hard-left media went all in for Hillary, it lost its ability to accurately discern reality and truth. Trump has forced the hard-left media into the tall weeds.
The dimoKKKRATS think he is a useful idiot and McCain thinks they are his friend. McCain is such as dumb @ss that he continues to do their bidding.
but this Press stopped being Real Press long ago
“My heavens, McCain is looking old.”
Maybe he’ll do us all a favor and just die.......
Traitors “get started” by undermining their oath-bound leaders in foreign lands.
a factual statement by the Senator...but responding to the false reporting of the press isn’t “suppression”.
His comments aren’t sincere and he just holds a grudge - like he did against Bush if you recall for beating him in the primary. He also went up against Obama likely for a personal grudge as opposed to philosophical differences. Grudges seems to be what motivates him.
The kid gloves treatment given your opponent and the unduly harsh treatment of Sarah Palin.
What a stupid man! you must be. Either that or youve You have been bought and paid for.
Don't spend your 40 pieces of silver in one place.
Dictators really get started by spreading lies and innuendo about the legitimately elected public officials. This is often done by petty, jealous and overly ambitious men who tried, but failed to win the high office to which they aspired.
Most of this sort fail, but occasionally one succeeds. This won’t be one of those times.
Yeah, Juan, if we actually had a ‘free’ press your comment might be relevant.
Our media aspires to be the Dictator.
Corrections duly noted and approved
Criticizing the press is NOT SUPPRESSING THE PRESS, you senile liberal POW-betraying Globalist traitor ISIS-supporting nuclear-war-wishing Obama-election-throwing miserable heinous piece of crap. Now adjust your dribble-cup, it’s time for your oatmeal.
I will celebrate with great gusto the day you pass on and go to hell.
So are of the people in Arizona that are SUPPOSEDLY “so sick of” McCain managing to say anything yet?
He’s your Senator, guys.
Call me when he's decomposing.
McCain has gotten real old. Oh, you meant his age, huh?
