Sounds more like they are trying to save the state from sharply-left mistakes.

IA used to be a swing state. Trump won it by double digits.

“sharply right.” When has the “Ass-retentive Press” ever labelled anything “sharply left?”

Iowa was trending left the last two decades or so, but it looks like they’ve been able to save themselves from falling into the liberal abyss unlike its neighbor Illinois.

Good grief. The writer’s disdain for anything conservative permeates this article. Then again, I expect no less from the AP.

But, why didn’t NH, also, vote for a conservative U.S. Senator and conservative House of Representatives, at the federal level, during, both, the GOP primary and the general election? The overall NH state offices moved rightwards, politically, while the overall NH federal offices moved leftwards, politically!

Any with common sense will eventually move toward conservatism.

Kinda humorous coming from the Associated press. He sounds like he is ready to cry because Iowa is moving rightward. I hope he doesn’t commit suicide when Minnesota follows Iowa into the GOP column.

Iowa finally removed the Rat cork in the state senate and can offer a GOP agenda. And it’s not wasting any time on little steps. In addition to AP’s whines our SOS is instituting voter ID. Tort reform has been introduced and should pass this year. And I hope they can find something to weaken the academic libs in the 1/99 county Gov Branstad didn’t carry in ‘14.

All of this...Pres Trump - Majorities agreeing with his immigration plans...most thinking they don’t go far enough - calling out the media for who/what they really are - taking his message directly to the people - calling out the Left for who/what they are - not backing down to anyone...is very east to understand.

PEOPLE ARE SICK OF THIS SH*T PEOPLE WANT THEIR LIVES BACK PEOPLE WANT THE COUNTRY BACK, NOT HANDED OVER TO THE LIKES OF SOROS, GATES, ZUCKERBERG, ETC, TELLING US WHAT’S GOOD FOR US AND MANIPULATING.

People just want to live their lives, raise and be with their families and be left alone. They’re tired of seeing this country overrun with immigrants and refugees, with insane radical educators, and know it all/busybody politicians, who don’t have a clue and are puppets for big business and their donors.

Wrong. Iowa has from the beginning been a Protestant state and Illinois a catholic state and have had completely different governmental outcomes for nearly 200 years as a result. Iowa = less corruption and moral governance and we all know what has happened to the State of Illinois, particularly Chicago. Quit lying.

Sounds like some SWAMP DRAINING finally taking place in Iowa - Great to see!!

Trump won the state by nearly 10 points...a total BLOWOUT there, in a state that usually leans Democrat.

So, add Iowa to our (expanding) collection!

The employment situation has changed a lot since I left Iowa almost forty years ago. A lot of the large, unionized industrial factories have shut down and been replaced by smaller specialty manufacturers. A huge number of family farms, run by Henry Wallace type progressive populists, have been consolidated into larger or corporate farms which are large suppliers of essentially industrial feedstocks of corn and soybeans. The eastern liberal Catholic river cities have declined in economic importance and political power. The main centers of liberal populism are the many college and university towns and government towns, and even those are starting to feel the pinch of restricted government spending.

All that signals a move to the right in the state as a whole, although Iowans could easily move back to the left if Trump doesn’t improve the job situation there.

I think one factor is the decreased influence of the Des Moines Register. Some 20-30 years ago it blanketed the state and was subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) influentially liberal.

Now except in the city and surrounding suburbs, you don’t see the Register nearly as prevalent for sale or distributed. Regional papers are more influential, well to those who still subscribe.
