You remember correctly. We lost the battle when we did not write it as "TEA (Taxed Enough Already)" with the explanation in parentheses every time until the meaning of TEA stuck. It was not idealogical on any other topic but the overreach of government paid for by overtaxing. Soon people used "tea" for all kinds of other meanings.
