Rumor the German shepherd has become Americas top dog.
Cheered loudly all around the ring by a packed crowd at Madison Square Garden, Rumor was picked as best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club on Tuesday night.
Rumor became just the second German shepherd to win the nations most prestigious pooch parade, joining the fittingly named Manhattan in 1987.

The dog was on F&F this morning. Gorgeous dog (and I’m not a dog person)! Seemed very sweet.
Really beautiful girl, but I was kinda pulling for the Boxer this time.
The more I study, the more I'm amazed by the miracle of vitamin C for healing and general maintenance.
For example, I found this: "Canine hip dysplasia is on the rise: Clinicians brief by Wendell O. Belfield, D.V.M. (2011) about using vitamin C to prevent and treat hip dysplasia while looking for help with arthritis and related inflammation.
I ordered some of his Mega C Plus.
Yeah. For the length of a football field she pulls me. No pedaling needed. So far we’ve gone about 2 miles and she’s not even slowed down when we get back. I keep adding distance. We’ll see what it finally takes to wear her out. The good thing is she loves it! She doesn’t want to trot. She wants to run!
Yes, but I’ve never seen A Mighty Wind. I do own Break Like the Wind.
“maybe your relatives will pool resources and give you one as a gift if they are made aware of your wish :)”
No, they don’t want me to have one.
“A rescue would be the first place Id go if I was getting a dog.”
With grandchildren around, I can’t take that chance. I need to raise it from a pup.
“She had a trained German Shepherd that circled around her as she walked”
You know, that dog may not have been actually “trained.”
A bright German Shepherd is a wonder to behold. All I ever had to do was to make mine understand what I wanted her to do, and she would do it.
Through the years I had her, she only barked on four occasions, and every time it was called for.
The Mitch and Mickey subplot is exceptional, as are the songs.
“I cant even begin to tell you how rescuing a GSD enriched my life.”
I think I have some idea. Can’t take the chance with grandkids around.
“Breeders often dump GSD pups with hip dysplasia.”
I don’t see how that could end well.
A little bragging........my parents professionally raised basset hounds. One of our dogs, CH. Erwin’s Copper Duke, showed at Westminster in the early 60’s. Didn’t win, of course, but it was a lifetime event for my parents and kennel. (My dad was also an AKC judge)
There’s a special type of traing for Shepherds. Can’t remeber what it’s called.

For the third year in a row, we attended the Westminster Meet the Breeds and Agility events, in NYC, this past Saturday. 140 different breeds to pet and interact with. If you love dogs it is really something special to attend!
Here's a pic of me and lovely Isis, my Shepherd rescue. She is, without a doubt, the most wonderful dog of all time.
This pic was taken during a hike that is done with a German Shepherd club and a professional dog trainer who is a K9 officer and marine.
The purpose of the hikes is to socialize the dogs, get them used to being around people and children and such. Very effective. My dog was afraid of people and dogs, now she is doing much better even allowing herself to be mobbed by children without cowering.
Shepherds are interesting. They have a number of personality traits that can manifest themselves and are usually quite pronounced.
Most of these traits are not serious, such as one who becomes very upset when the other dog that she lives with leaves her general vicinity, she just starts crying like it's the end of the world.
Most of the dogs are just fine around children, as there are a number of special needs children that come on these hikes. Many of the dogs are off leash the whole time and no problems.
There is at least one shepherd though who has to be muzzled the whole time and is not a dog I would want around kids. Beautiful dog, a lot of nervous energy, would make an outstanding police dog.
It's incredible to see the calming effect on this dog that the K9 officer has over it. Dog just turns to putty in his arms. The guy is a dog magic man.
But my point in all of this rambling is that with shepherds, the aspects of their personality are usually easily visible very early on such that one can tell of the dog has a suitable temperament to be around children, and there are definitely some shepherds who should not be around children.
I envy you.
Before my local grandson was born, three years ago, I signed up with every rescue outfit in the state.
I always wondered why nothing came of it, until a few months ago someone “in the know” clued me in to the age thing.
Last year I had a bit of a cash windfall, and set aside $500 for a pup. Couldn’t find one for that money. Just before Christmas I realized that I had prayed over this for a long time, and God either thought I shouldn’t have one or decided not to help.
To myself I sez, if I don’t find one by Sunday, I’m going to accept that as God’s will and spend the $500 on Christmas presents and groceries...and that’s what I did.
beautiful dog! looks a lot like my Gretta who is 11 months old. she’s very hyper and loves playing with the grand kids.
That’s awesome!!
Hey thanks!
She is beautiful and it sounds like you have a great connection with her.
