Speed cameras became a cash cow for the small village of New Miami, Ohio.
The town, with a population of about 2,200, collected over $3 million in revenue from heavy-footed motorists after it installed stand-alone speed cameras along one of its major throughways, US 127. The speed cameras in New Miami, which is less than one square mile, automatically fined motorists $95 if they drove faster than 50 miles per hour.
It proved to be a lucrative venture for the village just 35 miles north of Cincinnati. Flush with cash, it raised its annual budget from roughly $1.5 million to $2.5 million in 2013.
But now, the Village of New Miami must pay back every cent of the $3 million it collected from the speed cameras, which were ruled unconstitutional in 2014 when drivers filed a class-action lawsuit against the village.
An Ohio judge ruled in favor of drivers, who claimed they were unfairly ticketed.

Never ever pay a camera ticket. They are unconstitutional because they have the unproven burden of proving who is driving. Don’t be a smuck. Flip them off as you drive through the red light. They are government bandits. NEVER PAY!! They canNOT ding your credit either!!!
Ticket cameras are revenue generators for government, pure and simple.
HIGHWAY ROBBERY........
Wendle, have you ever received one and refused to pay it?
Ha — so true. They are top be sued for illegal debt collection!!! NEVER PAY!!
Where are the hero vigilantes who’ll tear these cameras down in the dead of night when you need them?
I agree with you 100%. I had the misfortune of getting a ticket from one of those down in that POS state Maryland. If I didn’t pay it, I was told my license could be suspended in my own state because they have some kind of agreement with Maryland.
I stewed about it for about a month, and realized I had to just pay it or I was going to get an ulcer, I was that angry about it.
The city government probably loved the cash cow until some of their own family members got pegged. Sorry but the automated ticketing cameras are too Orwellian and the company that installs them splits the profits from the fines paid and penalizes the city if they dont collect a certain amount of revenue per month. To top it off they use PACs and donate to the local judiciary and city council members to get them to jump on board. Sorry but I find all of it very unethical and Obamaesque to me.
I was so angry I was thinking of taking out any that I saw.
I obey the law. No I have not. but let me assure you , I am well aware of the law on these things and they are illegal as hell!! They violate the CONTITUTION!! and fair debt collection practices act both Federal and in every state. They are liable for millions in punitive damages. They cant prove who is DRIVING THE CAR!!!
“Never ever pay a camera ticket. They are unconstitutional because they have the unproven burden of proving who is driving. “
LOL! Tag says car is registered to you and your pearly whites identify your driver’s license and ZING! Nailed!
okay, then. You obey the law.
Sue them is a class action and YOU WILL WIN!! Plus they pay attorney fees and huge punishment damages!!Google law firms taking these class actions. These are bandits!!
I always wonder where these brave people are who are going to take these cameras down or refuse to pay if they get one.
Haven’t met one yet. I sure would like to.
I got a $50 ticket in the mail one time with the picture of my license plate when I went through the red light. To be honest I knew I was going the red light.
Which does NOT include this government THEFT!! You don’t imply that? I know you better than that.
“LOL! Tag says car is registered to you and your pearly whites identify your drivers license and ZING! Nailed!”
So says the toll road bandits who photoshop your antique plate numbers on trailer and hope you are stupid enough to pay it.
They seem to have no problem committing mail fraud.
Your license will be suspended if you don’t pay.
When I went through the red light several years ago I knew I was going to get a ticket.
