Here are 4 2008 cars from 4 DIFFERENT manufactures. Can you tell the difference?

Almost impossible. But you are comparing standard appliancemobiles with other standard appliancemobiles. If you do the same comparison using standard appliancemobiles from any other era, you will get the same "they all look alike" result.

Apart from the sameness of design, my biggest gripe today is that virtually every vehicle on the road today is white, silver, black, or minor variations on those three basic colors. Talk about boring!

Except for a few "sporty" or enthusiast cars (or commercial vehicles), interesting, bright, and/or attractive colors are completely gone from the showrooms. What was the last American mass produced car that could be had in a two-tone color scheme?

One German model that I am familiar with is offered in this country in 6 colors, but in Germany, you can choose from 36 colors (most cost extra, though).

A 2002 Honda. I see why you used the term daily driver.

See my post a few up from this one as to why. It’s a daily driver that will utterly humiliate any non-exotic car it is likely to encounter.

“There’s no such thing as a newly made “American” car anymore.”

Wander into any of the foreign automakers “assembly plants” here in the US ( as I have) and you will find that the high dollar value parts are imported from their parent company’s facilities in the “home countries.” Before Tesla took over the NUMMI plant ( which was originally a GM plant that mad intermediate size vehicles) but was then a “joint venture of GM and Toyota, you would see Toyota pickups and Toyota Corollas being assembled along with Pontiacs that were in effect rebadged Corollas. ALL of the drive train parts, plus the pickup frames were being imported from Japan. So it is a misnomer to say that these brands are “American.” The only parts that NUMMI made in-house were the stamped sheetmetal parts for the unibodies for the passenger cars and the pick up cabs. They also imported the pickup beds from Japan. These foreign automakers “diddle” the “local content” to make sure that they have just enough stuff made here to satisfy our current trade laws. It will be interesting to see what Trump does to these companies to force them to manufacture more here.

CAFE needs to be made meaningful.

Miles per gallon tells us nothing of value.

We need to change that to Ton-miles per gallon.

That will measure the practical efficiency of the vehicle.

That is because people decided not to buy the other color schemes. As for the two tone scheme, you can still get it on the Ford Flex and various pickups.

You're right. I remember when interesting colors were cool.

>> “ and actually gets more than 12mpg” <<

GTOs and Dodges got a fairly reliable 20-22 MPG on the highway.

That was due to their high compression ratios.

Today high compression is achieved by using turbo-chargers, which are fragile high maintenance garbage.

We need to go back to true high compression engines, and forget the turbos forever.

The only thing on cars that has improved is the brakes.

Engines are fragile, transmissions are fragile, and electronic engine controls are flukey and costly to diagnose.

The changes mostly were done in the name of an emissions problem that never really existed.

Catalytic converters make today’s cars serious deadly polluters, and need to be abandoned.

Doubling the amount of alcohol in our gas dropped my mileage 5-10 mpg.

The ‘60s muscle cars would be perfect with electronic fuel injection. That was the modern change that delivered long lasting engines by reducing cylinder wear from excess fuel that diluted engine lubrication.

We do need to get the alcohol completely out of the gasoline. Its totally detrimental, but Trump has no understanding of the issue.

What? I had a 1968 Pontiac 400 4BBL and it NEVER got over 12 MPG. It got 9MPG in the city. I kept that thing perfectly tuned.
