... massive leaks have revealed Microsoft is working on a brand new Windows platform and it is unlike anything we have seen before
Dubbed Windows Cloud, the references to the mysterious operating system first broke last week via code references in a new beta for the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update. Microsoft immediately told CNet "We have nothing to share", but now the floodgates have opened.
So what is Windows Cloud?
In a nutshell: a stripped down version of Windows 10 designed only to run Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps - aka apps designed to run on both desktop and mobile devices. Any attempt to run standard desktop programs on Windows Cloud results in the warning message: The app youre trying to run isnt designed for this version of Windows.

And right here is the reason you found the experience acceptable:
“Intel Core 2 Quad E8500 / 3.16 GHz”
That makes it not exactly a mainstream box. The supermajority of mainstream boxes in that era were Core 2 Duos at best.
Yep, have been running Linux of some flavor since 1994. Most stable platform I’ve ever run. (except the AS400 IBM that I used for years at the office. Dog slow but stable beast)
No, that wasn’t the problem. Even with that firmware patch made, the processor will only ever see a bit over 3gb of RAM. It’s a fault in that entire generation of Intel chipsets - PCs and Macs are both equally affected.
There are a number of VT100 terminal emulators for Linux. Also some 5250 emulators.
I last used a 5250 emulator for remote work about 10 years ago. Old in tooth, but worked.
Good point. I think I’ll pull a few dual core machines out of the closet and put Windows 10 on them for testing. You can still get the Windows 10 upgrade for free by checking off that you use assistive technologies.
Ah but those chips pop out and are swappable?
Part of the reason i took the money back was by just looking at the new iMac. Practically sealed, no RAM door with everything fused to the motherboard. Bigger models do have RAM access but they`re making them 2 grand disposable machines.
That was me and thank you for remembering.
Just another repackage of Windows RT.
There are a few valid reasons for having a system like this... say for an ACTUAL Windows phone. Fully cross compatible apps would be nice.
But I can’t even imagine how they are going to push this and fight against Android (if they even want to) without having a really good phone platform. And they’ve all but abandoned phones right when they were getting good. I loved my last one, until the abandonment set it.
But who wants THIS? Just put Windows on it.
Nope. Soldered to the board - surface mount packages. The iMac is basically a laptop board in a desktop box - and yours isn’t a lot more serviceable than the very latest one, honestly.
If true,then Microsoft is essentially renaming Windows RT to be “Widows Cloud”.
The CPU is mounted in a Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) socket. If you (gently!) try to pull the CPU out of its socket, you will find that it does not budge. You first need to release the chip from the socket. Turn the screw on the CPU socket 180 degrees counter-clockwise to release the old CPU. Then pull up on the CPU chip to remove it.

That’s just the CPU. That’s not the chipset. The chipset includes the bridge chips and such; they are soldered to the board. Only the CPU is socketed. Swapping the CPU will not solve the problem.
Exactly correct for every version.
Microsoft to find out that it was physically impossible for an XP machine to stay running for more than 49.7 days as it would crash at that time when a memory register overflowed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
And thus microslop invents ‘long haul testing.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Win 7 and later at least managed 497 days uptime before they overflowed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
A OS that’s 10 times better!
Sounds like they’re trying to move to a subscription service like Adobe. Instead of buying your OS outright for $150, you’ll be paying $250/yr for the same thing you’ve got now with maybe some cloud storage thrown in?
But I cant even imagine how they are going to push this and fight against Android (if they even want to)
I had noticed that the most recent release of the Microsoft SDK has added a bunch of hooks for supporting an ARM processor running in tandem with an x86 processor on the same system. Also, AMD is allegedly putting ARM cores and x86 cores on the same chip. Meanwhile, Win10 is soon getting a full blown Linux compatible subsystem.
Because of all this it wouldn’t surprise me if the next logical step for MS will be having Windows support Android APK apps.
Win 2000 Pro was.
:D
Win ME.
Abysmal.
Good point.
The lack of a real compatibility mode and the crap driver situation precludes Win2K from consideration. Also, the idiot licensing model.
