One supposes that the New Yorker readership can feel comforted by the fact that they are insulated from conservatism by reading a piece about conservatism rather than reading a genuinely conservative piece.You nailed it in a nut shell.
Pseudo-intelligent intellectuals that dote on the New Yorker think it is a sign of intelligence if you "get" the cartoons.
I actually have a back-in-the-day artist colleague who at a later date was published in the NYer, his cartoons.
His name is Futzy Nutzel and one of his colleagues is Spinny Walker.
