Google creates $4M crisis fund to support immigration causes

Google is putting its money where its mouth is.

The tech giant is creating a $2 million crisis fund for immigrant causes, which can be matched by up to $2 million from Google employees, potentially amounting to $4 million in donations that would benefit four organizations.

Sundar Pichai, Google's chief executive, detailed the fund in a memo sent out to all staff on Sunday, reported USA Today. A Google spokeswoman confirmed the report Monday morning.

The fund's creation follows Pichai's criticism of President Donald Trump's immigration order, issued Friday. The executive order puts in place a temporary ban on entry into the US by citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries as a deterrent to potential acts of terrorism. It created uncertainty at many airports over the weekend as federal agencies worked to interpret the requirements and sparked widespread protests across the US by people who saw the move as excessive and "un-American."

The immigration order has garnered strongly worded criticism from across the tech industry, with Apple, Microsoft, Twitter, Facebook and many others joining the chorus of voices condemning Trump's decision.

The fund will be Google's largest crisis campaign ever. It would provide funds to the American Civil Liberties Union, Immigrant Legal Resource Center, International Rescue Committee and UNHCR.

Remember when Google did this exact same thing when 0bama banned immigration for 6 months in 2011?

Yeah. I didn’t think so!

*SPIT*

then corporate, crony-capitalist, nanny-state Left, of which Google is a gold-star member, do not think the game has changed.

That their business and politics mix will never encounter push-back, or that their ideology will always have support.

Maybe they are right, and they and their cohorts will send Trump down in flames, or even have him killed.

Or maybe they have hitched their wagon to a failed business model

time will tell

sparked widespread protests across the US by people who saw the move as excessive and "un-American"

It did nothing of the sort. The "protests" were street theater planned and staged with paid agitators.

Nothing spontaneous about them.

Well that should end the tech wars on FR.

Frankly that is why I buy my tech 2nd hand or used, and pirate any software I want.

Google is worth $500B . . . and they “pledged” $2M to this?

That sounds like a rather cheap advertising purchase, nothing more. Their pledge is much smaller than the rounding error in their reported annual profit.

Wouldn’t be a crisis if they hired Americans for their American office.

All international companies who feel no particular allegiance to the USA.

I have to say the feeling is mutual.

My only experience with Google is I noticed that when I ordered a pizza, the website I was visiting used Googleads and it was filled with pizza ads from the same restaurant.

So I immediately went bikini and lingerie shopping to make my web surfing more pleasant.

Google is TERRIFIED that Trump is going to send the H1-B’s home.
They make a TON of money paying less for talent than it would cost them using American citizens.

But not a dime for US citizens.

Did they donate back when Obama and Clinton had bans? No, didn’t think so. It’s only to get back at Trump. Wow, talk about tiny, tiny people.
