US President Donald Trump and Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abd Al-Aziz "agreed to support safe zones in Syria" in a phone call on Sunday, the White House said, marking a potentially dramatic shift in Washington's posture toward the civil war there.
The White House cast Trump's support for safe zones in Syria as just one of many policy ideas that will "help the many refugees who are displaced" from the war, which has prompted the worst refugee crisis since World War II. The two leaders also agreed to support similar humanitarian corridors in Yemen, where Riyadh has been waging a proxy war with Iran.
The president is facing protests at home for banning Syrian refugees from entering the US homeland, as well as all nationals from seven predominantly Muslim nations: Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia and Libya.
In their call, Trump also expressed his view that an international nuclear agreement brokered with Iran in 2015 should be "rigorously enforced" a departure from his rhetoric during the campaign, in which he promised to shred the deal altogether.
In a separate call with the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Muhammad bin Zayid Al Nuhayyan, Trump also "raised the idea of supporting safe zones for the refugees displaced by the conflict in the region," the White House said in a statement.
According to the administration, the crown prince agreed to support the initiative.
Trump is making deals. Obama sat on his ass.
Safe Zones are a fine idea - but they should involve NO US troops.
Once US soldiers are there, they will be targets, and not one American should die for any amount of Syrians. Moreover, it will again become a political football of the Left.
It will be enough for the US to simply not muck around in Mid-east politics. If Obama and Clinton had not assassinated Gaddafi or engaged in a destructive proxy war in Syria, we would not have the problems of “refugees.”
Agree.
THIS was the big news today.
Ship the rapefugees back.
If those folks are prevented from coming to the U.S., I’m willing to see our troops provide cover for them.
Do I want Russia, Chinese, or some other nation’s troops down there? Do I want the U.N. down there? No!
We win very big by them not coming to the U.S.
As for Trump making a deal with Saudi Arabia, great. That’s what should have been taking place long before now.
And now you know why Saudi Arabia was not on the ban list.
Do the drive bys even bother to report news like this?
Are these so-called safe zones just another way to dismember the currrent Syrian government? And who is going to end-up running them? Any Christians allowed?
Are these so-called safe zones just another way to dismember the currrent Syrian government? Before we support them, we need to know who is going to end-up running them. And whether Christians are allowed.
I have no problem building temporary housing either.
The point of them, is to provide a place where refugees can go so they don’t have to flood other regional nations, and we don’t have to bring them here.
I do not know who will run them.
Hopefully this will reduce the need for the international community to sacrifice their nations foolishly.
If we’re talking about a tent city, that will be sized downward in short order, I don’t mind either.
The goal should be to assimilate these folks back into society in Syria.
Damn....I love this action!
Safe zones also concentrate the enemy
It could be in the south of Syria next to Jordan....
A real refugee wants to return home after the conflict.
A real refugee would prefer a local Safe Zone instead of traveling half way around the world.
A real refugee program would be based on Safe Zones.
A real refugee wants to be where it is not safe.
And he was called all sorts of idiot when he claimed he would try to do that during the debates - they all said he was naive because it was impossible to do w/o LOTs of boots on the ground and invading another country....
