The Week: President Trump is a terrible negotiator
the week ^ | 1 27 2017 | Jeva Lange

Posted on 01/27/2017 11:49:08 AM PST by MarvinStinson

Art of the Deal author and U.S. President Donald Trump is maybe not the negotiator he's chalked up to be. Despite his spokesperson once dubbing him "the best negotiator in the history of the world," Thursday's series of incidents with Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto were evidence to the contrary, The New Yorker's Ryan Lizza writes.

Mexico is a major trading partner and ally of the U.S., but was alienated Thursday when Trump insisted Mexico would pay for the border wall, Peña Nieto insisted he wouldn't, and Trump responded by tweeting that if that was the case, then maybe the two leaders should cancel their upcoming meeting. Peña Nieto, in essence, said, "Okay, fine."

This depressing episode confirms several of the worst fears about Trump. The first is that he is not a good negotiator. Rather than waiting a week before he issued his executive orders on immigration, Trump signed them at a moment that maximally embarrassed [Secretary of Foreign Affairs Luis] Videgaray, the Mexican official who is the most sympathetic to him. The moves left the unpopular Peña Nieto with no choice but to cancel next week's visit, and poisoned the relationship with one of America's closest allies and our third-largest trading partner.

A Mexican Embassy official noted to Lizza that the diplomats at the White House were also furious at Trump for signing an executive order in his first days as president that called for the construction on the border and expanded deportation laws. "They were like, 'What the f--- are we going to negotiate?'" the official told The New Yorker. "'You've done the job. What are we going to negotiate if you've signed this? What's wrong with you?'"

Ryan Lizza is just another frothing left-wing propagandist. He understands nothing about what Trump is up to. Lizza merely channels the whiny propaganda from Mexican officials. Trump has changed the game.

The Mexican leadership is a bowl of jello right now.

They aren’t going to dictate terms any longer.

There will be no open border. They will take their criminals back. We’re no longer going to be their human waste bin.

Start acting like a good neighbor, and we’ll treat you like one.

When negotiations start in person, Mexico will not be expecting a fantastic outcome. They will walk in with realistic expectations, and Trump will already have won.

The media is made up of young children who want the outcome now. “I want it now! Waaaaaa!” Under Trump they will learn to wait as they are educated in the art of the deal.

The 20% tariff is a scare tactic to make what he’s going to do seem not as bad - put a 5% tax on remittances to Mexico.

Technically, it has. Mexico (and the press) just don’t know it, yet.

Rule 1 is to make outrageous demands that set the bar HIGH. You can only go lower from there. No way is Trump is gonna lowball this thing.

Thursday's series of incidents with Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto were evidence to the contrary, The New Yorker's Ryan Lizza writes.

It's literally not even 24 hours later.

In other news Ryan Lizza is still mad that he couldn't park on his new concrete driveway immediately after they poured.

His car is still at the dealer having concrete cleaned out of the drive train, brake calipers and engine compartment.

Obviously, the writer of this story isn’t a trained negotiator. He or she (not sure what a Jeva is) should probably find something that they know about to use as a subject for its writing.

Back in the days when I was selling cars, we would do a walk around of the customer's trade-in, and pointed out each defect, even small dings. The more we criticized it, the more the customer was willing to pay for the new car. Sure, it's uncomfortable, and it makes the customer feel bad, but it helps get a better deal.

It's like Trump is pointing out to Mexico how weak of a position they hold. Just be glad he's on our side! The last guy seemed to give everything away!

I read somewhere that Nieto was in trouble with his constituency for looking soft.

The person postulated that President Trump might have set up this scenario to allow the Mexican leader to stand up to the US for domestic political reasons. If so, he’s now in Trump’s debt.

That would be an interesting development.

Jim, it’s as if all my decades of frustration with the namby-pamby attitudes of so-called GOP “leaders” are finally being purged - certainly during the campaign cycle but even more so with this amazing first week. God bless President DJT.

Trump works.

He does more in an hour than others do in a month.

“The discussions with Mexico just started, for Pete’s sake.”

The author of this article doesn’t know squat about hardball negotiations. Trump came out strong and laid down his main objective. The other party is free to walk off the used car lot, but will probably be back. We have just experienced 8 years of weak and pliable negotiating by the Obama administration. “Just tell me what you want and you can have it.” It will be fun to watch as the Trump team shows strength on our behalf, as he promised during the campaign.

Leave it to moronic leftwing correspondents to make judgement calls before the dealing is done.

Walking away is a big part of negotiations as Trump has said himself many times. I think that refusing to participate will only make it more expensive for Mexico.

#2, You’ve got to remember their idea of winning was Obama apologizing, Dropping trow and bending over. Then announcing to the world what a great deal we got before he even pulled up his britches.

These clowns have no idea what negotiations are. They were fooled by Nero into believing it meant capitulation and humiliation.
