Mel Gibson continues his run through awards season.
The Hacksaw Ridge helmer landed an Oscar nomination for best director on Tuesday morning.
The film's star Andrew Garfield also scored a best actor mention for the film about a conscientious objector in World War II [Desmond Doss], a coup for Gibson given that the actor also was being considered for the same category for his role in Martin Scorsese's Silence. The Lionsgate drama was also nominated for best picture, film editing, sound mixing and sound editing.
Gibson thanked his cast and crew in a statement and said the Academy's recognition of the film is "a testament to every single person who worked on Hacksaw Ridge, and to every soldier who made the sacrifices they made to fight for their country, including Desmond Doss."
What could be more exciting than listening to the nominations being announced while holding my newborn son!" added Gibson. "This is a truly wonderful honor. I'm especially happy for Andrew Garfield, our producers Bill Mechanic and David Permut, our editor John Gilbert and our incredible sound teams."

With magnificent fortitude he bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm as a splint and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid station.
No words ...
Tone it down some. Boycott 99.9% of Hollywood.
Yes, pretty hard to top that.
My pleasure...
Depends on who else in the production company etc is getting rich off this. And while I understand the value of the story, I could probably get more from reading about it. I cannot support the Hollywood Industry in any way. Sorry. That’s just how I feel. The studios get a fortune from every kernel of popcorn, soda and ticket sold. I will never support the indusrty.
Good. Let’s hope this wholesome movie flops. That’ll show ‘em!

The war scenes made the opening of Saving Private Ryan look like kindergarten.
I went to 3 movies last year, Hacksaw Ridge for me, Manchester by the Sea for the wife and some Dory the Fish Part 2 animated thing with the grandkids...
Hacksaw Ridge was fantastic, best World War II film I’ve seen in many years, better than Saving Private Ryan...if you are a Box Office boycotter (and I can understand that) you need to rent this one when it becomes available...
Whatev.
Sorry we couldn’t agree on the topic of this movie.
We probably agree on most everything else.
Superb movie. Best this year. I saw Patriot’s Day yesterday and was uninspired. Up to the bombs going off, and the bombing itself, very good. Then it seemed to drift, and the muddled message about Muslims are killers, yet, love wins overall was beyond silly.
I've only seen Hacksaw Ridge once and SPR multiple times so I can't compare them yet ... but I tend to agree with you.
Maybe I've become used to SPR's violence that seeing something new is shocking. Gibson's camera definitely doesn't turn away from what it sees.
I know...if the movie was made by an I dependant production co and shown in small theaters i may be able to get behind it. Perhaps I will keep considering....Thx for the convo. :)
Well, I seldom go the movies, and when I do I select what I expect to be fine movie with substance.
Being a Navy daughter, Army wife, Army mom and Army teacher, I walked away from this movie which had a grip on me for hours.
Prsy Gibson et al are rewarded.
Thank you too.
One of the things that impressed me about the movie was that it didn’t shy away from showing some of the brutality of the Japanese. The Japs were known for being brutal to wounded and surrendering Americans, and taking advantage of false surrenders to kill more Americans, and both of these were depicted in the film. No political correctness there.
First, been reading for years, this is my first post. Thanks.
I grew up in the Chattanooga TN area where Desmond Doss lived nearby for the last decades of his life. I remember seeing him in the annual Armed Forces Day parade. He is buried at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, where my mother and father are buried. When he passed he got full military honors, thought yall would enjoy a photo of it. We visit his grave annually at Christmas.

A guy at work asked if I saw it. I said I did and recommended it.
Somehow the Academy Awards came up. At the time I don't think any real nominations had surfaced. I said it was the best movie I had seen in two or three years, but Hollywood was not high on Mel Gibson these days, so he would not win Best Picture.
Since then I suspect the same will be true for Best Director.
When we left the theater, my wife said Andrew Garfield impressed her. I suspect working for Mel Gibson will doom him.
I just watched this movie. It moved me in ways I didn’t think a movie could. I come away in absolute awe at the power of Our Father, and his servant PFC Doss. I am ashamed I didn’t know his story. What is wrong in a country that does not teach of such acts?
