United Airlines has issued a ground stop for all domestic mainline flights due to an IT problem, the airline tweeted Sunday afternoon.
United spokesperson Maddie King issued a statement saying crews were working to fix the issue.
"We have issued a ground stop for all domestic mainline flights due to an IT issue. We are working as quickly as possible to resolve this issue and get out customers to their final destinations. We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers."
DEVELOPING: We will add more details to this report as they become available.
You would think they have massively redundant systems in place (like ATM networks).
Putin!
I hate to break your bubble but ATM networks are not all that redundant.
See, FreeRepublic isn’t the only place that has computer problems.
Exactly how are they going to test the fix?
Damn those Russian hackers!

Domestic leftist crazies who’ve resorted to sabotage?
That is absolutely true. If a Bank America ATM goes down it does not affect any other bank or ATM. If you are trying to access a different bank from BofA you will just not connect. The ATM being down might indicate the particular bank local ATM network is having trouble but that does not necessarily say the same bank in another area would be having trouble. A good analogy is the telephone system in a local business.
You are current, a real FUBAR.
Also, many smaller airlines worldwide are resident on larger airlines computers. Air Botswana may be screwed too, both planes!
>>I hate to break your bubble but ATM networks are not all that redundant.<<
I heard that on the street so Real World not meeting doesn’t surprise me.
OTOH I have worked in some shops where they have full, 5 minute to switch over to offsite, redundancy — for freaking ERP systems that could be offline for hours with no interruptions to operations.
Amazing United didn’t have that level of investment.
We've been hacked, all our aircraft will only turn left.
lifted.

Somebody needs to tell Johnny to...stop this madness!
I can’t comment on what United has as I have never worked on their account. I can say that even with the most redundant systems available, others (Banks) can still get cross ways. Had one customer troubleshoot an outage for 12 hours. The DR plan called for a 4 hr recovery.
Business continuity is more art than science. Lots of processes, escalations and approvals can get in the way of the technology. And anytime you have to deal with people, it can get complicated cause you are messing with money and someone’s “baby”. It is sometimes hard to hear from outsiders that your baby is ugly.
Once at the airport, you had to go to the check-in counter to turn in your luggage and exchange your ticket for a boarding pass. Once you got your boarding pass, you got to walk straight to the gate with no TSA security! At the gate, you produced your boarding pass at the little kiosk and they assigned you a seat. You could request a window or aisle but basically you took what they gave you. Then when it was time to board, you got on board and that was that.
They would serve hot meals on the plane. You'd get a choice of steak, chicken or fish but all of it was good. You could order those little liquor bottles to dump into your soda. I don't remember them charging for them or even asking your age. If you behaved yourself and was nice to the stewardess, she'd give you another little liquor bottle to pour into your soda.
The totally interconnected world is always a world more sensitive to systemic breakdowns.
