President Obama’s older daughter, Malia, embarked on a secret three-month educational trip through the mountains and jungles of Bolivia and Peru with no special treatment allowed — except for the security detail.
Malia, who deferred her acceptance to Harvard for a year, spent October and November traveling with a group of teens through the Colorado-based Where There Be Dragons organization, which says it offers young minds a chance to “examine current political trends, social movements and environmental conservation efforts” in Peru and Bolivia.
Photos emerged Thursday showing the 18-year-old posing for a picture during a jaunt through Bolivia’s Cordillera Real mountain region.

Bolivia is actually a surprisingly nice country, not as many tourists as Peru, and very inexpensive. The Salar de Uyuni is amazing and makes for great photos. I also felt quite a bitch safer than in other south american countries or in major european cities.
Yes, you can also chew coca leaves with a pinch of lime which you can buy in city markets - it helps any altitude related issues. I used it before going underground in the mines in Potosi.
It’s too bad we had to pay for her security there and I imagine the Harvard deferment is actually because she is a lousy student - they get to exclude her stats in the rankings since she isn’t starting with her class. It’ll be nice when the Obamas realize no one really cares about them once they lose power after tomorrow!
