New York, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Connecticut, Vermont, Illinois, and West Virginia all experienced shrinking populations in 2015-2016 according to figures recently released by the United States Census Bureau. This was in part due to internal migration by people seeking new employment opportunities, warmer weather or retirement in other states.
Despite some states benefitting from migration and higher birth rates (Utah was the fastest growing state with a 2 percent gain), the overall growth rate of the United States population reached its lowest point since the Depression era. The annual growth rate of below 0.7 per cent was the lowest since 1936-37, despite immigration levels of around one million annually propping up 45 percent of that growth.

I’ve thought the same regarding population, why would constant growth be desired.
But I’ve come to understand demographics, and its dynamics. A low birthrate cannot just be turned around on a dime by people deciding to suddenly have more children. It is a very difficult trend to reverse. And a collapsing population poses very serious threats to life and freedom.
This “Logic” only applies to the responsible.
The irresponsible just pop them out and then send the bill to the rest of us.
Being raised by a single PARENT isn’t a benefit. A single PARENT has to be both mother and father to the child. The single PARENT has to work full time to support the family and be very creative with finances.
But by all means, put together a case for abortion. I won’t.
Problem here in Pennsylvania is obvious.
REPUBLICANS in our State Legislature just won’t quit raising taxes.
Then we added a Democrat Governor whose just a tick to the right of the Cuban regime.
“...But birth rates have remained stubbornly low despite some economic pick-up in recent years, suggesting that more than just money is at play. ”
Where exactly has the economic pick-up occurred? I do see more homes being built, but the ones I stopped to look at were all using Mexican labor. So, yes, some more stuff is being built, but it isn’t American labor doing the work. (There is a nearby town with probably 30% illegals living there.)
People are not going to have children they are afraid they can’t feed. Not decent people, anyway.
one year is not a big deal. All sorts of reasons numbers can go up or down thats why the problem is not just the number of people but how the towns, states etc use the money they do collect from towns people or however.
They waste monies and make towns unsustainable.
when I lived in the desert why on earth have such over plantings of medians and senseless areas that it not only wastes money to have plants bought, planted, maintained each week or so, watered. Ridiculous planning and more ridiculous by those who accepted the plans and had it done. And that’s just one example of the stupid thinking of those making choices which effect the demographics etc.
If towns would get back to basics of what people living there need and would want - Basics - that would bring in real long term growth.
Too many places communities, towns etc try to build for the latest craze, then a few years down the road it’s not cool anymore and then it becomes a waste.
Churches too - coffee bars, and just trying to draw in people by latest entertainment phrases and gimmicks but creating fake/temporary attendance numbers that are unsustainable because you have to keep upping the “anti” to keep the people enticed to come.
Safety, decent working conditions and income, good schools, things like that are the roots.
Continual growth without strong good roots is what leads to the mess we have all over the country today - the greed of leaders and disrespect and expecting some one to help them of the up and coming generations. Even God let many of His chosen people Israel, die in the desert and opened up the ground and took many who were of wrong thinking at the time. He knows less is better and restructuring, reeducating is necessary at times.
Sheep + globull warming = shrink
Womyns and chilluns', minorities hit shrinkiest.
Congress should act! Throw money at shrinky places.
Or, are you one of those racist, misogynist fascist who simply don't CAIR about peoples suffering (woe, the suffering! the intense & painful suffering!)?
Thought so. How deplorable of you.
Connecticut may have a decreasing population but I can assure you that the traffic hasn’t gotten any better.
With Trump coming in a few days, the economy will improve greatly.
CT is in its second term of a horrible Democrat guv who with the legislature has jacked up every tax imaginable.
While sadly the US Census applies to all individuals in all state regardless of illegal presence (otherwise known as “undocumented immigration”), one of the things that comes to mind is states like California and Colorado didn’t experience such reductions. In fact, if you only traced the movements of NON-illegals, you would probably see more states showing exoduses. California, for instance, is losing over a hundred producers a day who go to states like Texas, Florida, and even Nevada, but they are offset by illegals or by people flocking to California for its government handouts.
Keep a close eye on Trump, the economy will get bettwr under him.
A huge part of the problem is the infantalization of children. We have ‘children’ who are 26 years old who are still on their mommy and daddy’s health insurance paid for by the parents employer.
If a 26 year old can’t figure out how to find and pay for a major medical policy. I have had my own health insurance since I was 18. We are in serious trouble as a country.
Correction: better.
FL Governor Rick Scott is a rabid cost-cutter. If any taxes were raised on his watch, I’m not aware of them.
The surprise to me was Wyoming. I bet the open spaces are too much for people.
