In "The Godfather," a Mafioso prepping young Michael Corleone to assassinate some rivals gives him a pistol for the job. After firing a bullet into the cellar wall, Michael complains, "Ow! My ears!" His friend says, "Yeah, I left it noisy. That way, it scares any pain-in-the-ass innocent bystanders away."
The Corleones would have had little interest in a bill that would allow gun owners to obtain silencers without the federal permits required since 1934. Some people like the deafening boom of a gunshot. Most shooters don't, and the National Rifle Association is pressing for enactment of the proposed Hearing Protection Act, which also has the endorsement of Donald Trump Jr., an avid trophy hunter.

Yes the noise is deafening. I always wear ear protectors on the shooting range practicing my 9mm handgun.
Right on.
Mikey was a Marine and a decorated hero.
But he probably didn’t shoot too many Kraut officers in the face over a plate of pasta.
You notice that too. LOL! I cringe whenever it’s presented like that either on screen or even in some novels. Do any of these authors need to hire someone that at least has a minimal working knowledge of firearms? They could pay me to do it.
SBR’s too please. The 16” barrel rule is just stupid!
Having built a few AR pistols, look into the devices as an excellent alternative. [Remember, uppers are not registered, the lowers are.]
I looked at the: NRA President's Testimony During Congressional Debate of the National Firearms Act of 1934

There was really no discussion on suppressors though.
I would vote not guilty if I were on the jury.
Yep - suppressors help save hearing - my ears ring after a lot of youthful shooting w/o protection. If you need to use a large caliber weapon in an enclosed area, w/o the opportunity to tell the bad guy to hold on while you don your ear protection, you will be effectively deaf for a short while - even a .22 LR causes a lot of discomfort.
I guess we could go back to screwing a two liter soda pop bottle on the muzzle.
file more gap between the cylinder and the barrel. Lose a little velocity make LOTS more noise!
What did you say? I’ve been shooting for years. I didn’t hear you.

You can make a .22 pretty quiet with a silencer. Bigger rounds, not so much.
Youtube features several videos of using an oil filter as a muzzling device ...
SBR’S must be one of the dumbest laws to ever hit the books of any country.
45 ACP and subs 300 BLK are some of the quietest rounds out there.....they are effectively very quiet because of their subsonic status.
There are several entities that sell adapters for oil filters. One even has his registered with the ATF as the “device”.
Best and cheapest one I’ve seen are the C and D sized mag light conversions. I’m praying that the rediculous suppressor laws are tossed in the dustbin.
And you can STILL hear them a hundred yards away.
My FIL hunts duck with a 10 gauge. It is subsonic and the loudest gun I’ve ever heard. I can hear him at pond almost a mile from my house shooting duck.
Yeah, sounds great. The Walker Game Ear.
I shot my 300WBY with a muzzle brake without ear protection ONCE, and am paying the rest of my life for it.
So the Walkers sounded like what i needed, but damn, what a pain in the butt. It was like the hearing you expect from inside a space helmet. I used them once and trashed them...and they ain't cheap.
—the other thing that really gets to me in movies especially is when , as the good guys/bad guys approach the opposing good guys/bad guys is the racking of the slides on the shotguns as they close in —
