House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) insisted that President-elect Donald Trump's campaign promise to deport 11 million immigrants is not going to happen.
During a CNN town hall on Thursday night, Ryan was asked by a recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) program who had with her a young daughter whether she would be deported.
"I can see you love your daughter, you are a nice person who has a great future ahead of you, and I hope your future is here," he said.
"What we have to do is find a way to make sure that you can get right with the law, and we've got to do this in a good way so that the rug doesn't get pulled out from under you and your family gets separated."
CNN host Jake Tapper questioned Ryan about Trump's mass deportation plan, reminding him of the campaign promise to create a "deportation force" to round up millions of immigrants.
"I know, I know," the Speaker said, laughing. "But I'm here to tell you, in Congress, it's not happening."

His answer SHOULD have been “arrest her.”
Ryan, in what alternate universe were you elected President?
8 days before the inauguration, Eddie Munster decides it is a good time to hold a CNN town hall and undercut Trump...
Ryan, really? We already know trump said we would have to work something out on the dreamers. He admitted he was thinking amnesty already. We will be lucky if he builds a wall.. he might just be more interested in war with China.
That’s funny, I thought we were supposed to respect the law in this country. No? Maybe I’ll go rob a bank today.
Ryan still seems to believe that he’s holding all the cards, for some odd reason.
Count on him to pop up again like whack-a-mole to undermine Trump. He’s demonstrated his allegiances. They’re not to the incoming Republican President.
Wait and see, Ryan.
First off, I never heard Trump call for a “mass deportation plan”. More fake news.
Second, this really isn’t that hard. Throw a few employers in jail who are violating federal employment laws, and people will begin to self deport when the job market dries up. I can’t imagine why this is so difficult for folks in DC to understand.
Make E-Verify mandatory, penalize $10,000 per month for non-compliance. Cut off all benefits to illegals. Make it mandatory to show proof of citizenship for drivers licenses and auto insurance, home and student loans.
They will self deport.
But I’m here to tell you, in Congress, it’s not happening.
key words “in congress”
good thing Trump doesn’t need congress!
Two steps forward with Trump's electoral college votes.
Two steps back with Ryan's continued presence.
We're even .. try harder.
Thanks
Ryan still seems to believe that hes holding all the cards, for some odd reason.
I would bet that he thinks that Mr. Trump will be ineffective due to the ‘charges’ being made against him. Personally I think that a bunch of senators and representatives in the Congress had best make sure their own houses are in ‘order’. Mr. Trump doesn’t play around when his reputation and personal integrity are ‘dissed’.
Nailed it. All Trump has to do is cancel EO’s and enforce the law already on the books.
Ryan has worked against Mr. Trump, FROM THE BEGINNING.
Republicans were WARNED IN ADVANCE what would be coming
from this RAT.
Paulie Ryan, Zero’s Cabana Boy all the way to the end.
He won’t be calling the shots anymore after Jan 20th. Just remember Trump will be carrying your balls in HIS pocket, Paulie.
As has been pointed out already, POTUS does not need “congressional approval” for deportations. He already has it - it’s called “the law”.
“But I’m here to tell you, in Congress, it’s not happening.”
CONGRESS is already Out of the Picture, the LAWS are On The Books Already.
Ryan you are a quisling POS!!
First, Trump NEVER stated he would mass deport 11 million, which these liars claim is the total here. Second, it is the cowardly inability to tell the citizen of another country they shouldn’t be here illegally that is the problem.
