Massachusetts weighs doing away with winter time shift
Fox news ^ | January 11, 2017

BOSTON –  Lacking authority to change the laws of physics to allow more sunlight on the darkest days of winter, a special commission is instead considering whether Massachusetts should change the laws of man and observe daylight saving time year-round. If adopted, Massachusetts residents wouldn't have to set their clocks back in November and forward in March, as most of the U.S. does. Benefits of having daylight saving time throughout the year could include energy savings and less seasonal depression, proponents suggest

In original timekeeping, sunrise was 6:00 a.m.

In more sophiticated areas, noon was noon.

But noon shifts with longitude. 60 miles is about 1 minute.

The railroads needed standard times to run on schedule, and that is how we got the time zones.

MA pols are idiots.

Some kids will now wait for school buses in the dark.

“More heart attacks happen on the time change day then any other day.”

Maybe that’s because one of those days has 25 hours in it. Stats are math.

I’ve wondered about that. Doesn’t seem to work that way though.

There is talk of abandoning leap seconds, and maybe periodically (like once every few hundred years) having a leap hour. UTC mainly aids navigators who need a good approximation to UT, but correction tables for whatever passes for civil time to UT could be published and distributed. With modern computers, it should be a non-issue.

Time will tell.

But Mass is the intellectual center of the universe! It should be allowed to keep DST if it wants to. Besides being almost the easterly most easterly of the contiguous states, during the winter it is screwed out of any daylight outside 9 to 5 working hours.

...Massachusetts should change the laws of man and observe daylight saving time year-round...

The entire US did this during the arab oil embargo back in the 70s. And it took about a month for people to realize that this put kids going to school on the streets well before sunrise, and we changed back due to the potential for traffic accidents.

Surely there is at least someone in the MA government who is old enough to remember this. Well, maybe not.

But I can promise that the problem has not changed, and that it is still a dumb idea.

Therefore, I will predict that the fewest heart attacks happen on the 23 hr day.

That should just affect you for one or two days.

Not the point.
Of course I can adapt, I've done so twice a year for many years.
The question is, why do I have to take direction from busybodies who won't let me sleep?

If MA goes to year-round DST, NY must also adopt DST. The other New England states are irrelevant.

I KNOW about the train schedules, and that had more to do with the time zones than DST as such. I am talking about what keeps people from switching back NOW (leaving time zones in place).

True, but pushing the clocks ahead an hour just means it will be the same time as it is in Indiana for kids waiting for buses.

God determines when the sun comes up and goes down. Clock changing games is man’s and govt’s way to play god and once again change the true God’s plan, now isn’t it.

NOON is when the sun is the highest point in the sky. Daylight savings time shifts that one hour.

I never liked DST. I remember discussions in the 70s gas crunch.

All energy saving promises turned out to be completely unfounded in studies after implementation.

It comes down to if you want more daylight when you get home from work or not. Probably a muslim conspiracy to keep them from leaving work early.

I personally dislike DST but if they do anything, I’d say move it a half hour and leave it.
