Long-simmering social tensions in Mexico are threatening to boil over as failing neoliberal reforms to the countrys formerly nationalized gas sector are compounded by open corruption, stagnant standards of living, and rampant inflation.
The U.S. media has remained mostly mute on the situation in Mexico, even as the unfolding civil unrest has closed the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego, California, several times in the past week. Ongoing gasolinazo protests in Mexico over a 20 percent rise is gas prices have led to over 400 arrests, 250 looted stores, and six deaths. Roads are being blockaded, borders closed, and government buildings are being sacked. Protests have remained relatively peaceful overall, except for several isolated violent acts, which activists have blamed on government infiltrators.

The few mainstream news reports that have covered the situation blame rising gas prices but fail to examine several other factors that are pushing Mexico to the brink of revolution. Narco-state corruption
The narco-state, or as Mexican activists say, el narco-gobiero, is a term used to describe the open corruption between the Mexican government and drug cartels. The narco-state has been in the headlines lately over the kidnapping and presumed murder of 43 Ayotzinapa students in Iguala, Guerrero, in 2014. This has been a source of continuous anti-government protests ever since.
Though the kidnappings remain officially unsolved, members of the Guerrero Unidos drug cartel have admitted to colluding with local police forces to silence the student activists. Twenty police officers have been arrested in association with the kidnapping. Former Iguala police chief Felipe Flores has been arrested and accused of offenses including organized crime and

The current violence in Mexico is a pale shade of a real civil war/ revolution. The last Mexican Revolution lasted 10 years, killed 1.3 million Mexicans (mostly civilians) over 500 Americans, and included a raid on Columbus, NM, a significant US punitive exhibition, and a sizable cross border firefight at Nogales, AZ.
If Mexico broke out into actual civil war, we would have to put a lot of troops on the border to secure it. A wall would not cut it. Tens of millions of Mexicans would seek to come north. Not to mention the likely spillover as people on this side of the border picked sides.
The human cost would be immense, the economic damage to Mexico incalculable, the cost to the US significant and it would make Syria look like a schoolyard scuffle.
Send the illegals back via trebuchet.
Democracies by their very nature result in civil wars. Democratic factions become increasingly malignant, corrupt, violent and organized. We are increasingly dissolving into factions becoming increasingly malignant.
You're telling me, they stink on ice.
No one “reported” the first go around when the gubmint enriched our corn farmers via ethanol and the riots down there were tremendous when the po’ folks could no longer afford their fajitas, or whatever...That was MANY MOONS ago !
Mexico needs a revolution.
A small cadre of White Spaniards holds all the wealth. And they would love nothing more than to send all of Mexicos brown population to the US.
Look at all of the Presidents in Mexicos history. Not a brown man in the whole lot of them.
And they call us racists?!?!?!?!

Oh yay. We’ll have a whole new batch of “refugees” to let in.
I offered that at a CRA meeting here in norcal 30 years ago and was roundly criticized by my felloe Republican. AND just think how much shorter the southern border would be.

Most Latin America has long had a policy that everyone is equally Spanish and Indian. Anyone who agitates on the basis of skin color gets kicked to the curb. It’s not a bad policy really. Thailand does something similar with their mixed Chinese heritage.
“small cadre of White Spaniards holds all the wealth.”
What ever happened to all “ The 13 Families” talk re meheeko ?
Trump has the power to collapse Mexico’s government. That translates into the ability to tell them “You will pay for the wall, and you will lick my boots too”.
Big deal, that's a slow weekend in Chicago.
The reason Mexico is a 3rd world country is their people. They are not able to run a successful country on their own, yet their citizens are becoming a large percent of our population.
Benito Juárez.
America does not need Mexico’s poor and destitute. Those illiterate in two different languages are not good candidates for immigration. America needs to only accept those that would be a benefit to the country...not a financial drain like many are now.
DEAD ON.
And some aren't even Spaniards: Carlos Slim Helu, the Lebanese rug trader who is the world's richest man (!), and just happens to be a Mexican national.
When does Carlos Slim redistribute HIS wealth to the gusanos? I'm tired of him redistributing mine.
Listen, Big Business simply cannot do without the Cheap Labor Express our Southern border provides. We will build a wall to stop the flood of illegal immigrants. Their response is to engineer / encourage / cheer for Mexico to fall into Civil War. This way, we will “have no choice but to help” by taking in the millions of “refugees from war-torn Mexico City” who double as low cost, unskilled laborers.
This way, Big Business keeps doing things they way they want, the media guilt trips masses of the US people into believing it’s the right thing to do and NOTHING CHANGES.
Trump better have a spine of steel to handle this one.
It needs to happen.
Why should a country of 135 million, with vastly more natural wealth than Canada have an average yearly earning of just under $10k per capita.
