There was not any actual footage of the Zuni that they had. If you look at the documentary, they are piecing together segments of film shot for other purposes to create the documentary.
The Zuni you saw looked like a test firing filming, and it sure wouldn’t have hit anything going that way! I can see some of the A-4 planes shown did have VA-46 markings, but I think this was sometime before or after the fire.
However, they did have a camera on the island, but it was not pointed aft. In a documentary about how the naval officer in charge of the investigation figure out what happened, apparently in the video they were shooting in the course of normal flight ops (it was a fixed camera, I think, but could be wrong) they saw a reflection on the glass the camera was shooting through that registered on the film, and knowing where the camera was and where it was pointed, were able to use the angles of glass and camera to figure out where, and when the missle went off, and as a result, were able to use that as a key piece of evidence.
John McStain has been a despicable loser with no moral compass and a danger to the republic for over 45 years. This is not news but everyone needs to know.

The narrator says “there it is” at 3:31 when it fires. Very odd that they try to sneak a test shot in as the real shot that started the fire. Unethical in my opinion.
I’ve been studying the F-4. Looks like red paint... translation VX-9 China Lake weaps test??? and there’s no PC in front of the jet, no jets in front, and he’s right smack dab on the centerline, facing port side I think, and shot lines are visible so it’s forward of CAT 3/4 JBDs at a minimum, indicating it is likely a test fire.
Again, it will never be proven true or false.
I would like to think he didn’t do anything dumb like that, since when you start you can always have people walking in cat walks etc who could be hurt.

McCain’s most horrendous loss occurred in 1967 on the USS Forrestal. Well, not horrendous for him. The starter motor switch on the A4E Skyhawk allowed fuel to pool in the engine. When the aircraft was “wet-started,” an impressive flame would shoot from the tail. It was one of the ways young hot-shots got their jollies. Investigators and survivors took the position that McCain deliberately wet-started to harass the F4 pilot directly behind him. The cook off launched an M34 Zuni rocket that tore through the Skyhawk’s fuel tank, released a thousand pound bomb, and ignited a fire that killed the pilot plus 167 men. Before the tally of dead and dying was complete, the son and grandson of admirals had been transferred to the USS Oriskany.

I think what it illustrates is that we are all susceptible to false info, but...we all know that anyway. I think conservatives are better equipped to handle this, because we are used to introspection and examination, whereas liberals don’t understand those concepts at all.

Liberals are their own gods. They suffer from this notion that somehow the cosmos bows before their throne and that all creation should recognize their supremacy in all things.
If it doesn’t support how they feel about something, it is, by virtue of not conforming to their perception of themselves, invalid.

McStain has never been loyal to the GOP. He’s much more comfortable with the Dems. He’s always the frenemy.
I wasn’t there, and I couldn’t care either way. Post 37 describes the start sequence and what to do if you get a hot start, wet start, etc... But post 37 describes a wet start as accidental.
I think what many say is that JM had done wet starts as a joke . There were many carefree and foolish things navy pilots did for kicks.
A fellow AOCS and primary flight students dad was a spad pilot in Vietnam. His dad told me the spad pilots would sometimes drag their tailhooks in the rivers for kicks. Did they do that? I don’t know. WW2 pilots fold me some funny stories also. And even in the 90s overseas there was a healthy dose of gross buffoonery.
Wet starts probably to into the same foolish category. Did JM do them? Not a clue.
All we have is video. And the training video shows a Zuni cook off in a simulated test shot... and the narrator makes it look like the cause of the fire by saying “there it is”.
The 1973 training video says there is a dispute regarding what happened, and we will never really know the cause as time rolls on (6 years after the accident they made this 1973 tape.)
I would guess that JM did NOT start the fire, since its not on video. Many said he did. If people made up that story... Then shame on them.
