Well, he was a Commander (O-5) at that point he was CO of the squadron (He was promoted while in Hanoi from LCDR to CDR, I believe)
I am glad neither of you take the correction personally, but it frosts me whenever I see this. I had a minor dustup with another Freeper on the same subject.
Geez, I DETEST having to defend ANYTHING McCain, but...we gotta have the facts here!

I assume you were in the Navy/military also. Thanks for your service if so. I was a 20 year tailhooker / also did tours as Flt Deck Shooter / Carrier Safety Officer.
A few things...
1. I don’t know what happened, and I guess I don’t really care that much. But the whole WET START (fiction) and WET BED (fiction) is very, very rich and delicious.
2. The picture you have. Seems to not match the configuration of the flight deck .... at all. In the TRIAL BY FIRE youtube, at 3:31, you can see that all planes are pushed back aft (first launch of day???) The pdf picture you posted has all planes on the bow (front), as if not the first launch. Not saying you doctored it. Not saying someone else doctored it. But the PLAT camera zooms aft to catch the fire at the LSO platform. The airwing is all parked back there. And only two planes are hot on CAT 1 & 2. Have you bounced the picture off the TRIAL BY FIRE video???
I may be wrong. I’ve been wrong over 1000 times in my life. Check it out though. It doesn’t imply a Wet Start either way. I’m just noting the picture doesn’t match the famous training film.

That is from Wikipedia, but I think it is a standard “generic” flight deck outline (kind of like the generic intersections on forms for auto accidents). It is from the official investigation documents, I would guess. Back then, they probably didn’t have nice programs we use now that could produce a decent scale outline...probably someone with a ruler and pencil. None of the outlines for planes are quite right, either, but likely enough to be able to tell them apart at a glance.
Still rlmorel, look at the Phantom, firing a rocket in the movie. He is pointing a certain direction. NOBODY is parked in front of him. The strangely short 0.5 second video of the rocket firing in TRIAL BY FIRE seems odd. The PLAT camera is behind the jet, the jet seems to be firing the Zuni out to sea.
I swear there was a ZUNI hitting a jet video when I was in flight school. It skipped across the deck and hit a plane in the video, which I cant find now.

I’m very glad you corrected this with detailed information. As you say, it can taint or call into count the rest of the information whether fact or not.
There’s enough else detestable here on McCain.
I appreciate the gentlemanly manner with which you address such issues. Disappointingly, I’ve seen an increase in (misdirected) acerbic attacks on fellow FReepers. We must keep focused on the enemy, build each other up, not tear each other down.

Back at you, thank YOU for your service...you would know more about this than I do, if you were a flight deck shooter and Carrier Safety Officer.
IIRC, you could have planes spotted aft like that all throughout the day, depending on the size of the launch. If there were a lot of planes getting teed up for a large strike, they would have to spot them somewhere, so as soon as a launch was over, the spotting would begin for the next launch which could (and did) cluster them on the tail as displayed there. (I was actually in VA-46, that same squadron that McCain was in, only separated by about eight years!)
From the accounts of dozens of eyewitnesses that meshed pretty well (who were likely ordered to give sworn testimony to NIS personnel) this fits pretty well.
I suspect is it not completely to scale...something used to illustrate a point in an investigation. I say that because the scale wouldn’t add much, only the relative positions and types of planes might have been the point of it.
I didn’t compare to the trial by fire video (it has been a few years) but I will check it out)
As for the wet start, that is what the guy in the linked article said, but I never heard anything about that in all the things I have seen and read over the years until I saw it in some Internet articles. To be honest, I don’t have any idea what McCain was like as a LCDR in 1967, but I will say, I never, ever heard or saw of someone doing an intentional hot start on a flight deck. Actually, I have never seen a hot start on a flight deck, though I did see one while doing maintenance testing, but it was due to a guy who simply didn’t follow the procedures. He didn’t do it intentionally, he was trying to get the thing lit, not have a fireworks show! I don’t care who you are, who your father is, or anything...if you did something like that intentionally on a flight deck full of planes ordinance and fuel, you are going to have a serious talk with someone regardless of your last name.
I doubt, from what I know, that he would depend on “daddy” to cover him and bail him out, because by all accounts, his dad was a pretty good officer, or so I was told.
