Eyeing the new boss warily, federal workers prepare for deep cuts under Trump

Federal workers in Maryland and across the nation are bracing for reductions in head counts, civil service protections and even salaries when President-elect Donald Trump and Congress turn their attention to government spending later this year.

Trump, who ran on a promise to "drain the swamp," has identified hiring freezes at most federal agencies as a top priority for his early days in office. Republican lawmakers, many of whom have long advocated for reducing Washington's footprint, are looking to cut benefits and make it easier to fire poor performers.

The threats and preliminary steps taken by Congress have created anxiety for many of the government's 2.1 million employees, including some 300,000 who live in Maryland.

"People don't know what to believe, and they're in a state of uneasiness," said Witold Skwierczynski, a Catonsville man and the head of the American Federation of Government Employees council that oversees Social Security Administration field offices. "That's the feeling I hear. People are unsettled."

Fiscal conservatives, long stymied by President Barack Obama in their efforts to trim the government workforce, have read the November election as affirmation that voters want a slimmer federal bureaucracy. Though government employee issues were not discussed much during the election, federal regulations and spending were central to Trump's campaign.

For every 5 they cut, allow one to be hired.

The directors of these agencies spend as much money as possible so they can ask for more in the next budget. Trump needs to have people overseeing these agencies that agree with him on cutting wasteful spending, approve their budget requests before it comes to congress, then we won’t have to rely on congress to do anything other than stop the democrats from wanting to spend the savings on some new programs.

there will be a lot of people who can run in two years based on the fact that he is trying to drain the swamp and is getting thwarted by certain people.

Well now, that’s a really good start. I like the idea of their being “unsettled.” Their “unsettling” needs to be “rewarded” by terminations. The idea that there are 300,000 of them in that little turd blossom of a state (MD) tells you the depth of the problem. In most places, that would be considered a good-sized city.

A lot of DC Federal workers are allowed to telecommute.
Revoke that and force them to come to the office every day.

Two weeks of Beltway traffic will have large numbers of them quitting.

That’s because these unionized federal employees want the higher wages, job security and cushy benefits that only democrat politicians will give them.

He can unilaterally impose a hiring freeze or order attrition after retirement, departure, death.

"Cut 2/3rds of the contractors and put the work in house"

The problem is that there is no one in the government who is able to do what contractors are doing, from running military mess halls, to transportation of supplies, to construction, to IT services to technical planning. Bureaucratic government management is pretty much all that's left inhouse.

If I were DJT I would cut the federal work force by 50% on January 20, 2017. Only the military would be exempt!!! These useless Democrats do not work whatsoever and IMHO, should be tossing hamburgers for ten bucks an hour....that is all they are worth!!! They are lazy, they take all kinds of time off , they go shopping while on the job, they fail to take care of our vets, and they work for political causes while on the job....Democrat scum is what is called!!!

Trump....dump them, let them suffer like Obama made our blue collar workers & minorities suffer across the nation!!! Let’s create jobs for those that need and want them, blue collar workers, Hispanics, African-Americans, etc., all folks that Obama and Clinton screwed for eight years, while they put these loafers into swank, cushion, government jobs!!! Let’s get America, moving again!!! And Trumpie...wipe out all tenure at colleges and universities...these professors are totally useless to our society and nation and children!!! Political, vermin hacks for Obama & company!!!

“It’s going to happen, DoD is ramping up a buyout program to reduce civilian staff by 20%.”

Now we need to read that the EPA, the VA and the Dept of Education are going to see similar cuts as a first step. I was shocked to read that the VA has the most employees of ANY AGENCY, and yet it fails to serve our veterans. Since it isn’t a Constitutionally mandated agency, it should be privatized and the hospitals it runs turned over to existing competent medical facilities. Perhaps the cheapest thing we can do is give all of these worthless people early retirements. At least then we would truly understand what they cost us all.

The first thing President Trump needs to do is get rid of the government unions like Reagan did with the Air Traffic Controllers and PATCO. Otherwise, he will find himself in a guerilla war with the unions, the Democrats, and the mainstream media (but, I repeat myself).

Finding new jobs should not be a problem with the roaring economy that Obama has created. I do not see what their problem is.
