Tech Founder: Middle America Is Too ‘Violent, Stupid And Racist’ For New Jobs

One Silicon Valley executive had a few choice words to describe Americans living in the heart of the nation, and they were not flattering.

Melinda Byerley, MBA and founder of Timeshare CMO, a Silicon Valley-based tech start-up, tweeted out Saturday afternoon describing what middle America could do to “get more jobs in their area.”

I lived in Kent, Renton, Mercer Island and Bellevue. I came from lower middle class roots. Seattle (not to mention Chicago, Oakland, SF, LA, NY, etc.) has its share of people that are not good tech job raw material. But they have something middle american does not have: A heck of a lot of people.

BTW, the mixing thing is best exemplified by the Wal-Mart experience. In the Seattle area, wal-mart competes with everyone else, so what happens is that a lot of folks don’t shop there. Go into the Renton Wal-Mart. It is like a third world country in there. It is disgusting. The women’s clothing section looks like a teenaged girl’s bedroom. I went in there 6 times when I lived in Renton. I never actually bought anything. The place is appalling.

Now, go into the Wal-Mart where I live in central KY. It’s the only game in town, really, which means everyone shops there. The people who work there are very nice. It is very clean. You always see someone you know or from your church. But there really are just not that many people that live in those areas.

i.e. Middle america just doesn’t have that many trainable people compared to the huge population centers. BTW, I live in a college town.

I used to bicycle commute to downtown seattle from the east side and the south side. I regularly rode through a lot of very seedy neighborhoods. But high tech employers can simply ignore those people and go for the ones that are well educated, have involved parents, and have the motivation to make something of their lives. There is a high quantity of kids like that in large population centers. There are much less in middle America.

Sadly, even a place like Louisville simply doesn’t have the raw human material that somewhere like Seattle has. The populations are not as different as you would think, but that is because Seattle is only a part of a HUGE population center. Louisville is surrounded mostly by farms and woods.

This is actually a true statement. It’s the same observation I’ve made about a LOT of the towns around where I live. However, a lot of them have such bad school systems because they are in dry counties. All the money goes to the counties that everyone goes to to drink. I know a few school teachers from both. They will give you an earful, let me tell you.

When I retired, my yearly salary was $127,000...but I had no problem whatsoever with other southern people, no matter what they made...It is just the way things are in the south...

About the only thing I agree with this woman about is the quality of education in these areas. Her own bigoted comments about the people here regarding diversity, tolerence and the like are really just projection. i.e. she only wants to live around people like herself. Interestingly, I LIKE living around people that are diverse, but just not in the way she measures it. My best friend here has an 8th grade education and is hard to understand, but we enjoy each other’s company.

There are some seriously bigoted people here, but she proves there are where she lives as well. She’s one of them. They are just bigoted about different things.

I’m using the dictionary definition of the word.

Appearances can be deceiving. I don’t look my nose down on people. I do have a strong opinion about the choices people make (including my own). Like what led to our “little sister’s” mother’s drug overdose. We try to help these people and sometimes it sticks, and sometimes you have to shake the dust off your feet. And some of them are friends. Most of my friends here make less than $15 an hour. It’s not relevant. I’ve learned that they prefer Bud Light to Alaskan Amber, so I keep around what they like when they come over. We’re really not that different.

However, a lot of folks here really are making very bad decisions on a daily basis. And when an area already has a small employment pool, employers have no motivation to do anything here. Again, my call center example is empirical evidence. It is a real problem.

I admire the way you are willing to hang in there and put forth your ideas, although you can see they aren't very popular today on this forum. My own thought, having spent time living in Louisiana, Texas, NC and Virginia, and a lot of time in E Kentucky, Mississippi and S Carolina is that you may be over generalizing about the South and Central USA, as what you describe certainly exists, but there are a lot of other communities with proud, hard-working citizens who don't meet your description. There is no question, however, that drugs and government give-aways are taking a huge toll on our population.

REally? and you made such an overly broad statement about 1/2 of Murica? Eeee yeah, dat don’t make sense.

2. Free-range, artisanal, organic, customized marketing. If Adwords isn’t right for you we won’t recommend it. Simple as that. As Reid Hoffman says, “Every marketing strategy is suis generis.” We won’t be running a playbook on you. Our team is based in the United States with people who specialize in the speed and execution-orientation required by the most demanding startups.

Couple things:

A. Am I orderin Chicken Cordon Blue or getting a fancy lettuce salad?

B. Who in duh Phuk is Reid Hoffman?(I know who he is but, 90% of your customers won’t and will be confused)

C. Your people are in the United States? Just not in Middle America, right?
