As President-elect Trump readies to take control of Washington where he has promised a hiring freeze or worse, worried are federal workers are looking to a new $40,000 buyout program set up at the Pentagon but expected to be expanded to other departments.
Several trade publications that cover federal workers and legislation said that the buyout, increased in legislation from $25,000, will likely be a hit in the Defense Department as the Pentagon moves to cut headquarters staff.
The cash is available to civilian bureaucrats. It was included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017.
Some federal workers are worried about Trump's plans, concerned that he may go further than a hiring freeze.

Probably “cheap” at twice the price if it allows Trump to unload workers without all the legal nonsense that PE’s get to try and stay employed with the government even when their jobs are not needed.

Seems a little expensive just to get them to go away. How about security showing them the door unexpectedly and sending their personal effects to them afterwards in a box via USPS?

You could easily dump 50% of the federal work force with little or no change being felt by the average american. Outside of the salary saving the next biggest savings would be consolidating the wasted space left behind.
Reassign those living in Northern Virginia to satellite offices in Hagerstown, Maryland (and vice-versa).
After two weeks sitting in beltway traffic the resignation letters will come flooding in.
Follow this up with
“Any employee caught stealing from the government or taxpayers will immediately be terminated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!”
I like the idea of severance pay to Federal workers who are willing to leave. Please do not refill their positions. Deposit the present value of their pensions in a 401K.
Impossible. Aunt Pelosi said a couple years ago that they did a thorough check of the fed gov and every bit of it was already cut to the bone and no cuts were possible.
That would be desirable. Given the direction that all government pensions seem to be taking, getting ones' earned assets out of the hands of the crooked politicians and into the hands of the individuals is not a terribly bad idea.

Buyouts make sense, and insure that people who leave do so on their own volition. This also may be a part of early retirement programs.
My company offered one such program and it attracted about 20% of the intended target. Also caused some very good employees to jump the ship. (not desired).
However the next year the company followed up with layoffs to finish cutting the dead wood. The end result was a lean company that managed to do well for years after this.
My job was never at risk during this time, and I did encourage people who were planning to leave soon anyway that the new policy would mean that they would work almost for nothing for a while if they did not take the offer.
I still believe this is a very good move when cutbacks are in the future.
Now, the flip side is that Trump policy will spur growth down the road, so the Pentagon will want to keep good employees. The trick is to find out who these employees are and give them some incentive this year to not take the Voluntary Out.
Feds aren't that smart. I was transferred to an office 25 miles from my house, but I go against traffic on Hwy 114, so my commute is usually 30 minutes.
If I qualify for the $40K, I'm gone. Within two miles of my house are 10-15 new office buildings, I'll be fine. I've already calculated I can pay all the household bills on my pension and SS.

That’s a good point. It would also put a cap on the amount the person gets from the Federal taxpayer. If ex-employees retained active Federal pension accounts, then future administrations could use the promise of higher benefits to buy their votes.
Yeah—I’d give them the option—a buyout or the pension they have earned to date.
First I’ve heard of this 40K buyout. I’d take it as well. Plenty of tech firms here, many with great telework policies.
