The New York Police Department is allowing Sikh officers to wear full turbans in place of the traditional police cap and grow beards up to a half-inch long as required by their religion. NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill announced the change in policy Wednesday following a graduation ceremony for new recruits surrounded by officers wearing navy blue turbans kept in place with police brass, CNN reported. “We want to make the NYPD as diverse as possible, and I think this is going to go a long way to help us with that,” O’Neill said. “It’s a major change in our uniform policy, so we had to go about it carefully. And now I have the opportunity to make the change, and I thought it was about time that we did that.” O’Neill said the NYPD has about 160 Sikh officers.

I don’t recognize America anymore. I’m more angry than sad, every day that passes. Every other group assimilated and accepted the American Way, or didn’t participate. Now we’re becoming more and more a third world $hithole, in all senses of the word. I’m sorry for my kids and future grand kids, for me, I’ll be dead and won’t care at that point. The great exception and experiment in human history, continues to circle the bowl....and become....like every where else. Same for Europe, Canada and Australia. Pathetic.

Sikhs are honest to a fault and incredibly brave.They should be some of the finest officers on the force there or anywhere.
Who cares? Sikhs should be allowed to wear beards and turbans. I don’t see an issue.

every Sikh i have ever met has been sincerely kind, nice... good people... they make pleasant neighbors... that’s all i have...
I work with a Sikh gentleman and he has been nothing but kind to me. Religion is never discussed...I don’t ask about his and he doesn’t try to keep me from practicing mine. Just my 2 cents, just that he is a nice person
Only ones who cant wear anything religious of course are Christians.
None of this is good. If its a non religious job, and the uniforms and dress codes are to be uniform...
No more upending stuff for minorities while not allowing the majority the same. Adhere to standards or go somewhere else. They do this on purpose because they know the standards ahead of time, no one hides them or surprises them.
So much for separation of Church and State.

Exactly right. If this is allowed, why shouldn’t burquas be allowed, and what about robes for mohammedan officers if that is what their cultural identification calls for? Who are we to impose our dress codes on people just because the country belongs to us (or once did belong to us)?
