U.S. expels 35 Russian diplomats, closes two compounds: official

The United States on Thursday expelled 35 Russian diplomats and closed two Russian compounds in New York and Maryland in response to a campaign of harassment by Russia against American diplomats in Moscow, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday.

The U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters the Russian diplomats would be given 72 hours to leave the United States. Access to the two compounds will be denied to all Russian officials as of noon on Friday, the official added.

"These actions were taken to respond to Russian harassment of American diplomats and actions by the diplomats that we have assessed to be not consistent with diplomatic practice," the official told Reuters.

They got nuttin’. Sure, Russians have been attempting to hack us as we have been attempting to hack others, including them.

But this is the best that they can come up with:

That first sentence simply says it is likely they were able to get something from the DNC. The second sentence is a jello-sentence non sequitur that “information”? What information? And “the U.S. Government”? What, Joe or Valerie? And “assesses”? I take that to mean a guess for propaganda/fake news purposes.

I think there is a prevailing belief of some here now that Putin is pursuing America’s interest and is a swell fellow, certainly not a former KGB man.

I don't think we believe that. I think we believe that our national interests and Russia's national interests are aligned enough on some fronts that we can cooperate. Trump knows that, but Obama's anti-nationalist (unless you're Palestinian, of course.)

He should have done this in July. It’s righteous retaliation for what the Russians have been doing. As to whether the Russian actions were retaliation for something we did I haven’t a clue.

The kenyan did nothing after those Russian spies were caught a few years ago. In fact he exchanged them for basically nothing and limited the amount of intel gathered, IIRC. He has never been concerned about US security.

In this case, these are largely symbolic gestures with little real impact. The ones who suffer are the diplomats from both countries who must suffer the inconvenience being PNG’d. You not only have to depart within 72 hours, you must look for a new job on a moment’s notice and probably remain in limbo for months until getting a permanent assignment.
