Wait a minute, after thirty-nine years, it turns out that Star Wars is about race?
Sort of. You may not notice at first (I didn’t, until the second half of the movie), but in Rogue One there isn’t a single non-Hispanic white male among the large cast of heroes. The rebel band seeking to steal the plans for the Death Star from the Empire is led by a white woman (Felicity Jones), a Latino man (Diego Luna) and three ethnic Asians (Riz Ahmed, Donnie Yen, Wen Jiang), with advice from a black man (Forest Whitaker) and a droid (voice of Alan Tudyk). Among the rebels, non-Hispanic white dudes (for convenience, I’ll just call them white from now on) are relegated to the background, while the Empire is represented by brigades of sinister white men, led by Ben Mendelsohn and (the digital reincarnation of) Peter Cushing as Imperial officers. It’s as if the cast was meant to echo a Hillary Clinton speech in which she described her coalition as everybody but white males.
The casting was not accidental. The Empire is (now) a “white supremacist (human) organization,” Rogue One co-writer Chris Weitz Tweeted the Friday after Clinton was defeated in the election. Another writer for the film, Gary Whitta, replied with his own Tweet, “Opposed by a multi-cultural group led by brave women”—then deleted it.
That little spasm of Trump-induced liberal anger led to what might well be the weirdest and most pathetic boycott in the history of boycotts: Malik Obama, the Kenyan gadfly, Donald Trump supporter and half-brother to our president, Tweeted out, “Boycott Star Wars people! #DumpStarWars.” Star Wars will do fine without you, Malik.
True, pale-male bean-counting, along with white identity politics in general, are as boring and silly as any other kind of identity politics. Who cares if the rebels are a gorgeous mosaic? White guys have plenty of other heroes at the multiplex this year, and every year.
Still, the movie is obviously trolling to make a lame political point, dragging in a fashionable left-wing trope where it once again does not belong. Not only is it tiresome to imply that being white and male is something vaguely shameful, the white-supremacist angle makes no sense in the context of the other chapters in the Star Wars story.
If the rebels are some sort of coalition of minorities, women, and sarcastic robots, specifically opposed to white supremacy, why did they subsequently turn to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo to lead them? Weitz and Whitta (both white males) are injecting dumb liberal talking points into the franchise just as George Lucas infamously did in Revenge of the Sith in which (as Jonah Goldberg first pointed out) he jettisoned three decades of mythology in order to make a cheap fist-waving gesture in the general direction of George W. Bush. In the movie, the future Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker, says, “If you’re not with me, you’re my enemy,” which prompts Obi-Wan’s riposte, “Only a Sith lord deals in absolutes.” Huh? The whole basis of Star Wars is that there is a good side and a dark side to the Force and you have to pick one. If you’re not with Darth Vader (or radical Islamists) you certainly are his enemy. Darth isn’t interested in multilateral peace negotiations.
Moreover, the decision to leave white males out of the rebel crew is indefensible from a marketing perspective. Like any Star Wars movie, Rogue One hopes to sell a lot of action figures. Little kids presumably like to buy action figures they can identify with, and though I don’t have any marketing data to back it up, it seems likely that white males are the single biggest market for Star Wars swag. Why would you turn your back on your best customers? It’s yet another example of how Hollywood’s incessant need to prove it is on the progressive side of the political Force sabotages Hollywood’s own best interests. Certainly these days Hollywood is more concerned with appeasing the Chinese government than with the reaction of the conservative half of its own country. Multiculturalism has a strong justification in marketing: if you want to sell to girls, boys, and every ethnicity and race, you’ll give everybody a hero that looks like them. So why leave out white males? The only white guy in Rogue One who has much value to the rebel force is an Imperial scientist played by Mads Mikkelsen who has misgivings about his work for the bad guys. But fifty-one-year-old Danish guys best known for playing Hannibal Lecter are probably not great models for action figures.
The irony is that, a long time ago, in a film industry far, far away, Star Wars was born in left-wing politics. Lucas dreamed up American Graffiti, Apocalypse Now (a project he subsequently passed off to Francis Ford Coppola) and Star Wars as a trilogy—one film about the carefree days just before the Vietnam War, one about the war itself, and one a dystopian sci-fi look at the ramifications of the aftermath—with plucky guerillas Luke and Co. representing the Viet Cong and the technologically awesome Empire meant to stand in for the United States.
Oh, you didn’t know that? That’s because makers of Hollywood fantasy films used to have the good sense to keep their politics to themselves.
Where do the Hispanics of Star Wars come from?
British voices have always been the sound of “nobility” or “serious” actors but any other accent is out of place in the story that takes place in a galaxy FAR FAR AWAY.
Why not have amphibian or avian people who people in altered accents? They’d still be non-white/non-European/non-human.
In Star Wars (at least the first one) humans weren’t even the majority.
Billy Dee Williams was asked what about his experiences growing up prepared him for his role in Empire Strikes Back, he said “nothing did”, that this story take place far from earth. He did say that be brought a bit of Errol Flynn suave pirate to the character.
This is the tip of the iceberg. China is buying all the movie studios so they can make us all learn how they are our betters. Just wait.

Trump - the empire strikes back
Heard Stan Lee (90+ year old figure associated with Marvel Comics and the Clintons) boast that they had new superheroes that were "Indian"(Hindi), Hispanic (from various regions), etc. etc. No details on plot twists, no "big picture" discussion of why super hero movies may now be the biggest box office, no discussion of his early days (40s) in comics or his heyday (60s and 70s). Just SJW identity politics. Blah blah blah.
And at conventions like the 75 year old Worldcon, the SJWs are ageists who hope for the day that the old writers at such events will just die soon. All animals are equal on the animal farm, some are more equal than others.
I tuned out of all of it 8+ years ago. Tired of the tv insulting my politics, my religion, my skin color, my sex, my nationality, and falsely revising science and history at every turn.
Did need it. Didn’t need the pro-bama hope train “first time I’m proud of my country” momemnts.
Now the facebook fascists (and at search engines and elsewhere) “trend” the DNC talking points (don’t expect to see any opposing views given positive highlight from the self-appointed tastemakers. Even when you set your configuration settings to certain sources (or block others) or opt into certain pages, they ignore this to shove the daily talking points and politically correct celebs in your face. You don’t have to be on socialist networkking sites to be bombarded with it. Go to a search engine (even BING) and the borders are lines with #fakeNews.
As China buys up the studios, they will also own the publishing/distribution on 80+ years of American cultural history. Wait until their next Mao just incinerates the master prints/negatives/recording tapes all in the name of a glorious “cultural revolution” as the Chinese Communists did to their own arts (and artists) and archaeology.
In order to allow an American, or any foreign movie into China, the movie has to have Chinese actors, and portray China “in a positive light.” That’s why we are seeing so many Chinese characters, and of course, they are always self-sacrificing and noble. As far as the movie goes, I had trouble understanding the Spanish character, the rebel leader, as his accent was very thick. They also have the self-sacrificing noble and wise black character which i thought was the worst character in the movie. The movie makes up for all of this in the last 5 minutes of the film. People were jumping out of their seats clapping and yelling for joy, but not for reasons you would think. I don’t want to spoil it. My favorite character is the robot K2so

Didn’t myself see racism in the movie, and it was pretty good. Wasn’t paying particular attention, however.

Oddly the movie I really liked recently was a simple Vietnamese movie I watched last month. Pretty simple, but I really liked that one.
The movie this article was about was solid, if undistinguished, in my view.
The latest 'big deal' in the comics' industry is a character named 'America Sanchez', who in her guise as MS. (not 'Miss') America kicks *ss all across the Marvel Universe. Female and hispanic, of course. Meanwhile, the white male Captain America is having all kinds of SJW problems...the propaganda is breathtaking. Fortunately, only a few dozen people are still reading comics.
I guess Lucas and Co. think that La Raza supporters will fund all of their future movie making.

Tragic how all the old vices come back rehabilitated at some point. For a while, racism was the ultimate evil, now it is accepted and celebrated again, only the victims have changed.
The same old idiots are doing the same old thing with the same old self-righteousness. Their great grandparents hated black people because it was popular, and now they hate white people because it is popular. Their great grandparents were sexist against women when it was popular, now they are sexist against men now that it is fashionable.
Even antisemitism is making a comeback. Richard Feynman couldn’t get into Columbia University because their quota of Jews had been filled. These morons are working to bring that all back.

On that old anti-terrorist show about which everyone raved so loudly - 24 - which starred Keifer Sutherland, he’d spend the first half of the season tracking down terrorists, then the second half finding out that, after all, it was those nasty White guys who’d created all the real evils in the world.
I’m still waiting for a realistic TV show that depicts moslems as the source of all the world’s terrorism.
Even in the movie “The Sum of alll Fears” the bad guys were changed from moslem terrorists into some sort of unlikely neo-Nazis.
