Perry Said to Be Trump’s Top Candidate for Energy Secretary
Chicago Tribune ^

Donald Trump has narrowed his search for energy secretary to four people, with former Texas Gov. Rick Perry the leading candidate.

People familiar with the president-elect's selection process said two Democratic senators from energy-producing states -- Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia -- are also in the mix, along with Ray Washburne, a Dallas investor and former chairman of the Republican National Committee.

If Trump picks any of the four he will break with recent tradition of putting scientists at the top of the Energy Department. Among other things, the agency is responsible for policies on the safe handling of nuclear material.

Trump met with Perry and Washburne while attending the Army-Navy football game in Baltimore on Saturday. It was at least the second time he'd spoken to the two men for potential roles in the new administration. Trump met with Heitkamp at Trump Tower in New York on Dec. 2, and is scheduled to meet with Manchin in New York.

I’d rather see Palin in this spot. It’s beginning to look like she won’t be a player in his administration.

Manchin may not be an “automatic” return to the Senate. My WV relatives tell me his “schtick” is wearing thin with the boys & girls in those hills.

I think Palin would have been a better choice, but I’m “heartless”.

So why is his degree in Animal Science? Did they ranch at all?

I’m a successful farmer, come from generations of successful farmers and ranchers so I am genuinely curious since farming and ranching are actually quite different.

Do you think Palin is going to pull up stakes and move to DC for some office? I don’t.
She’s going to stay outside where she can speak her mind and take care of her family needs.

I understand. Sarcasm has to be subtle or it's just stupid and on a site like this, with all different kinds of people and opinions, sarcasm is easily lost.

“Do you think Palin is going to pull up stakes and move to DC for some office? I don’t.”

She was quite ready to do that, just eight years ago, to serve the worthless John McCain. Why wouldn’t she do the same for a real American president?

I think something else is going on.

His experience as gov of Texas gave him ample experience governing a state heavily dependent on the oil and gas industry. Permian is Americas key to the industry and by now hes an old pro. He would definitely be the kind of proponent Trump could rely on as well and was a Trump supporter very early on. I would rather see him in that position than in congress anyway. Sounds like a good fit.

She wouldn’t have to. She could call it in.

A lot has changed in Palin’s life since the summer of 2007. It’s just my opinion
but I don’t think she wants the full time grind of DC now.

Perry was a good governor and Texas has a long history of oil and gas development. If you lived for more than a decade in Texas, particularly if you were in Texas politics, you had to know about the oil, gas, and coal industries as they are essential to our economy.
