Martin Scorsese has ambushed the Oscar race with Silence, a Masterwork movie about faith and ideas that rocks everything weve been dealing with. Andrew Garfield may win the Oscar for best actor. But this is the Big Idea movie Hollywood has lacked for some time.
Its strange, too, because the word out of Los Angeles on Sunday was that Silence was boring or something. I dont know who those people could be who thought that. Silence is a meditation on theology, but its also a completely engrossing, absorbing movie in which Big Ideas are made accessible in dialogue and visuals to the point where I often found myself on the edge of my seat.
And thats pretty interesting since this is faith based movie and I am neither Catholic nor Christian and dont have a tremendous interest in Jesus. But Silence doesnt require that its a universal message that I think will be embraced by every intelligent moviegoer. Not only, there is some humor, and there is Scorsese violence including one scene where a man literally loses his head.
But this is Japan in the 1600s, and its a savage, brutal place where Christianity is being rebuked. Silence is based on the 1966 novel by Shūsaku Endō about two Portugese Jesuit priests (Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver) who are sent to Japan as missionaries. They are following in the footsteps of their mentor, played by Liam Neeson. Scorsese and screenwriter Jay Cocks do something really interesting here, because they are allowing everyone to speak in English but they are not English speakers. At one point its explained very elegantly that its Japanese and Portugese being spoken and that the priests are being translated by one of the Japanese.
Driver and Leeson are each very, very good but the movie hinges on Garfield. Hes in almost every scene. And whats fascinating is that Garfield ( who is Jewish in real life by the way) is in the seasons other Christian movie, Hacksaw Rdige. But where that movie is hackneyed and dopey with heavy on the nose Catholic imagery, Silence is sublime. Garfields work in Silence is superior because of the writing and directing, and Silence is the movie for which he will get his Oscar nomination.
Scorsese says hes been obsessed with Silence for about 40 years, and worked and worked to get it made. In between of course he became famous and celebrated for his gangster movies and remakes, gems like The Age of Innocence. I asked him last night, was this subject always on your mind? The answer was Yes. Scorseses own devout faith just blooms here in a way that casual fans of Taxi Driver or Goodfellas will not expect. Like one of those films, Silence moves its certainly never boring.
I may be wrong. But this is what I think right now. This has been a good season for Oscar films and there are plenty La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, Lion, Moonlight, 20th Century Women, Arrival, Sully. But Silence is different, its the Big Picture. Its a discussion of who we are and how we got here. In a world where religious persecution is more prevalent than ever, its also about who we can be.
One last thing: Silence features a Japanese actor named Issei Ogata who will be the Christoph Waltz of this film. Hes a total break out, and should get Best Supporting Actor nods. He doesnt speak English, but we met him last night and hes willing. He gets very special mention.
I like SOME of Scorsese’s movies. This one does sound boring. I really want Mel Gibson to take home best director he deserves it. That movie he did was the best since American Sniper. It was THAT GOOD. I think it is called Heartbreak Ridge, but no matter the name, please go see it. You will not be disappointed I promise.
“Hacksaw Ridge”
“Heartbreak Ridge” was the most excellent Clint Eastwood movie. Required viewing.
Hacksaw Ridge
Shusaku Endo and Ayako Miura were Japan’s Christian authors in the postwar era. My favorite Endo book is The Samurai, but Silence is his best known work. For Miura, my favorite is The Wind is Howling, but she is best known for Shiokari Pass.
Thanks. I knew I screwed up the title. I agree Heartbreak Ridge was a good movie. Clint is excellent. Mel is finally getting back to work.
Thank you. I can’t keep names correct at all. And to be honest from day one this one seemed more difficult for me to remember then many other movies.
I hope Mel Gibson is coming out of the wilderness. He has great talent
Oooooooh. And I’ve been worrying about that all month...
The lead actor in Heartbreak Ridge is in this film too. I have seen a reviewer write that it is more of a question of which of these movies he will win the best lead actor award for, not who will win it.
I read this book years ago. I just hope anti-Christian Hollyweird hasn’t ruined the Catholic/Christian dimension of this.
Am I missing something here? What's unusual about people speaking English even though they're supposed to be Japanese and Portugese? Hasn't this been done hundreds of times in movies?
Don’t forget the Oscars were sold to BLM
I keep seeing very positive reviews about this movie, but I’m wary - Scorcese hasn’t made a good movie in decades. I’ll give it a try, I guess - I’m certainly not going to see the latest Star Wars anti-Trump effort.
Yup, we won’t be seeing Star Wars.
Hope it does as well as grrrl power Ghostbusters did.
“...Hacksaw Rdige. But where that movie is hackneyed and dopey with heavy on the nose Catholic imagery...”
Isn’t Hacksaw Ridge about a Seventh Day Adventist?
I remember reading some interesting stuff years ago about the Japanese persecution of Christianity. The faith was driven underground, its practitioners had to outwardly adapt Shintoism to survive while passing their faith down in secret, by word-of-mouth, and often with no priests or written Scripture available. By the time the prohibition was lifted and underground Christians were able to practice their faith openly, it had evolved into a hybrid between the two, one that still exists today.
I’ll have to check out The Wind is Howling. The rest I’ve touched on.
I guess you didn’t read the article.
.
It’s almost to the point that if Silence had delayed a bit he might have had back to back wins - he’s been that good in both is what I’ve heard.
