Is Yale on the verge of changing its name? (University gets caught in its own trap)

My alma mater, Yale University, embroiled in the latest PC controversy about the renaming of one of its dormitories, or residential colleges, named after John C. Calhoun, has announced a process under which students may petition to have the name of Calhoun College (or any other residential college) changed. One wonders however, if this will only be the beginning, rather than the end, because Yale itself is also named for someone connected to the slave trade, Elihu Yale.

This is hardly a new development, politically speaking, for Yale. In my day there were fliers in big 50 point font screaming "LESBIAN IS LUSCIOUS!" posted in Yale Station; Morse College hosted a huge sculpture of a giant lipstick on a tank, the statue of Nathan Hale was regularly defaced on the Old Campus, an oval pool that dripped water seasonally called the "Women's Table" was put in front of Sterling Memorial Library; and people wore pink triangle buttons and even giant pink triangle sweaters as a fashion statement. Viewed in this light, the Calhoun controversy is only the latest iteration of the restless urge to find wounds on the basis of race, sex, and class.

First the Calhoun controversy. I never thought much about the name when I attended; but now with a groundswell arising to change it, I have to wonder why it was named for him in the first place. Most people generally know that Calhoun was a pro-South, pro-slavery advocate, but did you also know Calhoun was secretary of war under President Monroe? Did you know that he was a Vice-President of the United States not just for one term, but two?

Anything else is blatant racism

Yale needs to be tasked with fixing New Haven.

Good point. I’ve never been there, but have heard that New Haven has some really bad neighborhoods. Sounds like a good project for a liberal university— improve your own hometown using your liberal values. Tell us how it works out.

Elihu Yale, whom Yale is named for, was also involved in the slave trade?

Quote from the article:

As an official for the East India Company in Madras (present-day Chennai), Yale presided over an important node of the Indian Ocean slave trade.

In the 1680s, when Yale served on the governing council at Fort St. George on the Madras coast, a devastating famine led to an uptick in the local slave trade. As more and more bodies became available on the open market, Yale and other company officials took advantage of the labor surplus, buying hundreds of slaves and shipping them to the English colony on Saint Helena.

Yale participated in a meeting that ordered a minimum of ten slaves sent on every outbound European ship. In just one month in 1687, Fort St. George exported at least 665 individuals.

As governor and president of the Madras settlement, Yale enforced the ten-slaves-per-vessel rule. On two separate occasions, he sentenced “black Criminals” accused of burglary to suffer whipping, branding, and foreign enslavement.

Although he probably did not own any of these people — the majority were held as the property of the East India Company — he certainly profited both directly and indirectly from their sale.

I was working with a guy and we drove from NC to NH and stopped at hs daughters in New Haven. She was getting a PhD in Chinese studies and lived in the graduate student ghetto, abut 2-3 blocks mostly made up of houses rented by masters and doctoral candidates. BTW I spent the night in her study with bookcases full of book. She told me to help myself to the library. Everything was in Chinese. LOL.

The area around Yale was a pit. She took us to a little hole in the wall restaurant with good food, but the neighbrhpod was very bad. I would not have taken my wife or kids there. I thought, Yale is the 500 pond gorilla in the city, why don’t they free up some endowment money or pressure the city to clean up?

BTW she turned down state and the CIA and CNN and went to work near her home in Silicon valley. She went to law school on Hawaii and her role model is Ruth Ginsgerg. predictable, her family is all flaming libs. But she’s smart and quick and you better be on your toes. Yale grad.

Yale is also my Alma Mater. I suggest the university change its name to Snowflake University and the students will be known as Flakes to warn potential employers.

Every student must be enrolled into the organization Students Wildly Indignant about Nearly Everything (tip of the cap to Al Capp) or SWINE.

Just think of all those resumes that will have to be updated and all of those diary entries as well. Then they can go back and correct all of the history texts and novels that have or mention Yale. This should be a new industry to ‘unperson’ this institution.

‘I resided at ? (formerly “John C. Calhoun”) while I matriculated at ? (formerly “Yale University”)!’

Query: Will Yale locks need to be renamed?

So it won’t help one much if in a fit of PC rage if they change all of their Yale locks to Master.

Graduating from Yale just became the kiss of death on a job resume’.

The list of “persona non grata” college grads just keeps growing.

Here’s a little tidbit from Wikipedia about Leland Stanford ( the University and alma mater of Chelsea Clinton is named after him ):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leland_Stanford#Racism_against_the_Chinese

Racism against the Chinese

The gold strike in California had brought a large influx of newcomers into the territory, including Chinese immigrants. They were persecuted in the gold fields and in small towns and cities, as well because of racial discrimination.

Anti-Chinese sentiment became an official political issue over time. Stanford, as governor, ostensibly supported the prevailing mood in the state, which lobbied for the restriction of Chinese immigration. In a message to the legislature in January 1862, Stanford said, “The presence of numbers of that degraded and distinct people would exercise a deleterious effect upon the superior race.”

His statement was initially received with widespread enthusiasm, and Stanford was lauded as a defender of the white race. Public opinion shifted when it was revealed that Stanford’s Central Pacific Railroad had recruited and imported thousands of Chinese laborers to construct the railway track.
