The Harriet Tubman $20 Bill Could Make an Early Debut
TIME ^ | December 7, 2016 | Maya Rhodan

U.S. government officials say Treasury Secretary Jack Lew could release early images of redesigned $5, $10 and $20 bills in an effort to pressure the Trump Administration away from reversing their plans.
.
.
.
...in the throes of the primary election, Trump called the move “pure political correctness” and suggested moving Tubman to a lower denomination like the $2 bill.

“Andrew Jackson had a great history. I think it’s very rough when you take somebody off the bill,” Trump said last spring.

“Jackson was beaten to an inch of his life when he was 14 because he refused to shine a British officer’s shoes. “

Harriet Tubman risked her life repeatedly, conducting slaves through the underground railroad. This was not a paid position. She is a true hero.

Of course nobody carries cash anymore so except for internet most won’t even see this picture in real life especially millennials.

That's false.

“Who was Harriet Tubman?”

You can read more extensively at someplace like Conservapedia. but as I recall from my childhood, she was a free slave who repeatedly snuck down south and “conducted” groups of escaped slaves through the underground.

Very brave, selfless, and godly.

Frankly, this is a change I wouldn’t have an issue with. When it comes to currency, mix it up a bit, just like they do with coins and stamps. Who says the same old faces need to be on our US paper currency forever? Variety is good, and more interesting.

Of interest is the rationale behind this recognition. One wonders if the person themselves is being used to make a statement. Canada is catching up fast with these "recognitions". Coincidentally today, the announcement has come from the Canadian Government about a woman to be pictured on the currency. Five women were nominated.

The choice is Viola Desmond (1914-1965). She will be shown on a $10 bill next year. She was in a small town called New Glasgow, Nova Scotia in 1946. She was told to take a different seat in a movie theatre being she was black. She refused and spent a night in jail and paid a fine. Later, she ran a successful beauty parlour business in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Now we see the public apologies much too long after her demise. What is it with these politicians and others, dragging up this stuff? This on something that has long ceased and posthumously.

The black race is about 14% of the U.S. population, probably less with the gazillions of illegal Hispanics crossing the southern border every day. Nonetheless, it seems like the black race wants much more representation than 14% in the U.S. Only our cowardice allows them to get away with this.

I always wonder whether any blacks watch those endless PBS specials on race. I doubt it. They’re generally awful so I don’t know who watches them.

Heros are a dime a dozen. You obviously do not know enough about Jackson. This is pure revisionism, like removing the confederate battle flag. Liberal incrementalism.

Jackson is the only president to ever pay off the national debt! I can see why the Dems want to eradicate him. I shall refuse to use the Tubman bill.

Harriet Tubman may have helped as many as 12 slaves escape.

Thank goodness Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed southern slaves only after the South had already seceded (and was absent from Congress)

...And the last slaves in our union were freed in New Jersey at the very end of the war.

I agree. Putting a gun-toting Republican AAD on the front of the 20 dollar bill is a good change.

That image is Harriet Tubman summed up in one picture. To me it says “I came down here to free you, now go on and get your ass moving!”

Renaming a documented vessel (like the USS Gabrielle Giffords) is considered the height of bad luck by most mariners, sailors, and commercial fishermen. Renamed vessels have a way of sinking, catching on fire or exploding shortly after the renaming ceremony - often taking their crew with them. Which is why renamings are very rare.

Really bad Idea.

Just deal with it and move to have ships named after heroic navy men again.

Harriett Tubman would have voted for trump....

Hillary would have taken her shotgun away...

Just like Obama did on her bill

Was discussing this with my wife this morning...we don't talk politics, and it isn't because she is a liberal...she just doesn't see it as a topic for discussion. For her, it just is.

But as we discussed it, she was all for putting a woman on the bill. I said that while I liked the look of the version of her with the gun and I didn't have anything against Harriet Tubman (and also don't have any affection for Andrew Jackson) I was opposed to the proposed change on three fundamental aspects: 1.) It is political pandering, plain and simple. 2.) There is no need to do it, the $20 bill was redone a few years back with anti-counterfeiting features. 3.) We have more pressing things to do with our money. She pooh-pooed my objections, saying there are a lot of things we spend money on that aren't necessary either, and this was just another one. I countered that we have to take a different approach, using the example of the proposed upgrade of Air Force One as an example. We don't HAVE to do it. We don't even NEED to do it. We can defer it, it is in no way critical. Save a few billion there. Don't mess with the currency for a few years. Save tens of millions of dollars there. As the old saying goes (updated with inflation) "A few billion here, a few billion there, pretty soon we're talking about real money." I said that case anyone hasn't noticed, we are broke...and getting more broke with each passing day. What is the debt now, something like $50,000 for each man, woman, and child in this country? This was driven home to me as I drove to work, and there is a section of chain link fence near the busiest highway in the state that shames everyone who drives by, saying something like "Veteran Benefits Inadequate-Shame on You, America." I read that and thought, every dollar we spend putting Harriet Tubman's face on a bill, or upgrading Air Force One to a shiny new model, is a portion of money we aren't giving to the people we SHOULD be giving it to, or working to pay down our debt before it destroys us. If we were running a household and we were $200,000 in debt, would we pay the money to get Johnny's broken tooth fixed, or would we buy a new home theater system? The answer is obvious. So, that is my main opposition to it. We need to begin hammering on every single financial nail of debt before they turn into nails in our national coffin.
