WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Republicans are laying the groundwork for a fresh effort to overhaul the food stamp program during Donald Trump's presidency, with the possibility of new work and eligibility requirements for millions of people.
The GOP majority on the House Agriculture Committee released a two-year review of the program on Wednesday that stops short of making specific policy recommendations, but hints at areas where Republicans could focus: strengthening work requirements and perhaps issuing new ones, tightening some eligibility requirements or providing new incentives to encourage food stamp recipients to buy healthier foods.

Surfer Dude’s gonna have to get a job!
Please please please! It is so darn galling to work and pay taxes, knowing what happens with the EBT culture. They have really got it down to a science.
And no junk food and pop!
if Dems refuse reform, then just cut the SNAP budget 25%, which bypasses Senate filibuster, and let the states figure out how they want to deal with the reduction.
I fully realize that to most FReepers this proposal does not seem radical. More practical than radical. However the democrats and food stamp recipients will scream bloody murder over this! My fall back position would be that the new policy should deny payment for any “junk food” which would most certainly include pop or soda along with twinkees, Ho Hos, potato chips and the like. In addition, if you want the stamps, work for them. This program is so ripe with fraud they could lop BILLIONS off of this appropriation easily.
Beer really tastes best at the end of a day of HARD WORK, anyhow.
Why would you need to jump into your foxhole? You are spot on with your observations. The federal government needs to get out of the benevolence industry.
You are being far too generous with my money.
Powdered milk, powdered eggs, bread, and spam.
Don’t like to eat that stuff? Get a friggin’ job!
TANF funds on the EBT card are equivalent to cash, like any debit card. Nothing to do with food stamps or requirements therein.
After brainwashing several generations into mindless groupthink, now all that is needed is to convince them that the herd is going they way that TPTB want.

BTTT!
If Trump ends the Welfare Way of Life, our illegal immigration problem will stop cold.
Caned Spam and Cheese tastes good too.
Exactly.....
You have had a dinner of Ham and Mothers, you have melted at least half the one inch of grease with your C Rat cooker, and your get a rumbling in the lower bowel.
You grab your E Tool and hopefully get your draws down before the explosion. Now the aftermath.
Dig and toss and hopefully you get it all. The next day the dingle berries have grown and your bow legged gait has widened due to pain in the rear nether areas.
Newark.... The chairman of the NJ Advocacy Coalition noted on Face Book that Hillary has invited 200 NJ EBT card holders to the gathering of million dollar donors to be held December 18 at New Yorks’s Plaza Hotel. Although dress for the event is black tie, the fortunate New Jersey few will be permitted entry merely by showing the invitation and the EBT card.
The EBT card holders chosen were by lottery that included a diverse mixture of NJites. Representatives of the NJ LBGT Coalition For Progress were said to have complained that adequate representation among the LBGT was denied in favor of racial diversity. Richard Willis of the committee commented that the LBGT community was so small that to have included one of each type would not have been fair.
I remember taking my husband’s grandmother to get her monthly cheese, rice, peanut butter, dried milk, etc.
Go back to that and like another poster said - eliminate the middle-man. The reason many people are poor is because they can’t handle money responsibly - and allowing people to use a debit card to make irresponsible food choices does not help them.
They should also be required to go to nutrition and cooking classes to learn how to COOK.
Give them a voucher for fresh vegetables and fruit.
It should be mildly unpleasant to be on the commodity list - enough to give the people an incentive to get off, while still helping those who genuinely need it.
My old man picked up a liking for Bully Beef, canned corned beef (Limey C Rats) during WW2.
Like it, myself, on Black Rye with cheese and mustard. Spam Depression food, my Uncle.
I remember hearing radio advertisements with the underlying theme of “everybody does it”
The left will lose a big source of public funding for such ad campaigns.
Instead, Dr. Ben Carson will be exhorting folks to get some self respect, study hard in school, work and save, and keep their families together.
There will be a lot of positive factors occurring at the same time, but just removing the massive gov’t funding for the negative leftist agenda will be huge in itself.
I’m for cutting out that free lunch program in schools-if a parent is getting food stamps, they can damned well pack their kid a healthy lunch-meat/cheese sandwich, fresh fruit, some raw veggies. I have never asked for or gotten a single food stamp, welfare payment or other taxpayer funded benefit, even when I was a single mom with a baby juggling college and work-and I’m very proud of it.
Since I’ve been widowed, I’m technically one of the working poor-and like most everyone out here, I intend to work as an independent contractor/small business owner for the rest of my life-retirement is not an attractive idea at all...
If I can pick myself up after being smacked down economically-more than once-so can everyone else-I’m fresh out of sympathy for anyone not totally disabled-no more f’in welfare for snowflakes...
I agree. I think even people living at home, eg house bound, can do some form of telemarketing if they are psychologically sound enough. If they have episodic weakness that is not possible, of course.
