WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Republicans are laying the groundwork for a fresh effort to overhaul the food stamp program during Donald Trump's presidency, with the possibility of new work and eligibility requirements for millions of people.
The GOP majority on the House Agriculture Committee released a two-year review of the program on Wednesday that stops short of making specific policy recommendations, but hints at areas where Republicans could focus: strengthening work requirements and perhaps issuing new ones, tightening some eligibility requirements or providing new incentives to encourage food stamp recipients to buy healthier foods.

If you're on the gubmint dole, you shouldn't be able to buy junk food with food stamps.

Good. To that POS who bought beer in front of me at Rite Aid weeks ago with your EBT card, your days are over.
Start by booting college students out of the program.
Tens of thousands of them were actively recruited to sign-up during the Obama administration.
This program was created for people like my former neighbor....homemaker, 10th. grade education, four kids, husband murdered in an armed robbery. Not for spoiled college kiddies.
And a can of cashew, really ??!! With food stamps ??
Milk, bred, eggs. That’s it !
And requirements
Feeding able-bodies folks to sit at home and watch tv is immoral
If by “reform” they mean ELIMINATION, then I applaud.
Sick of the welfare state for both the rich and the poor.
Long overdue.
I wondeR whAt the demoCrats wIll Say abouT this!
If your kid gets 3 meals a day “free” at school, your food stamps should be reduced drastically.
If you get food stamps for your kids, their baby daddies get food stamps for them, and your mom and sisters all get food stamps for them, then there needs to be a cross-check to discontinue the duplication.
If you are under 60 or 65 and able-bodied, you should be limited to a certain number of months or quarters for receiving food stamps.
If you receive farm subsidies from the government, you should not be eligible for food stamps.
You should NEVER be able to get “cash back” on food stamp purchases.
The only beverage items eligible for food stamps should be (and I am being generous here) coffee grounds, tea bags, milk, and juices (in economy size cans, not $4 single-serve bottles).
No meats or sea food items that are priced above a threshold, say $8/lb, should be eligible for purchase with food stamps.
Libs and the media will start screaming about starving folks dying in the streets.
Yes. For any college students who are still on their parents’ health insurance to or through age 26, they should automatically not be eligible.
GOOD. Make them do drug testing too.
It used to be that single men could not get welfare.
My renters on food stamps have used it as their income. They buy stuff and resell it at a discount. Then, they buy drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. (Found this out through a police raid at one of my properties.)
Others have told me they have WAY more EBT than they can consume.
The problem is, once you establish a program for anything, you have to develop a set of rules. Then, you hire people to staff the program that no private company would hire. The people in the program conspire with those outside to tell them how to maximize their take. They start beating the rules because the rules can’t possibly be comprehensive enough to stop these creative people. The ones running the program are just as at fault as the cheaters.
My sister’s church will help people. They will give you a place to live and get you a job. But you can’t have a cell phone or cable TV or all those toys poor people seem to have. Damn few people will accept their help. Those who do are usually on their own in months. Fantastically successful. But like the old saw, how many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb? One, but the lightbulb has to want to change. These people, for the most part, don’t want to change.
Bush was right. Let the churches run the program. (All right, give me a chance to get into my foxhole.)
The US government should post what people are buying to the public. Hell, we’re paying for it.
Disengage it from the Farm Bill. This isn’t the 1930’s.
I’d add cheese, tuna, peanut butter, and SPAM. Dried beans and peas. Canned veggies.
What they say every time Republicans are in charge:
"Republicans want poor children to starve."
