Donald Trump picks Gen. John Kelly for Department of Homeland Security secretary
CBS News ^ | December 7 2016 | CBS Staff

Donald Trump is tapping Gen. John Kelly to run the Department of Homeland Security, CBS News confirms.

The final request and acceptance, sources told CBS’ Major Garrett, occurred while Kelly was traveling in Europe. His pick for DHS secretary will be announced by the transition staff in the coming days.

Kelly is the third general tapped by the president-elect, joining Gen. James Mattis, Mr. Trump’s pick to become the next secretary of Defense, and Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Mr. Trump’s incoming national security advisor.

Like Mattis, Kelly is a Marine with a reputation for bluntness.

Seems to be a fine choice. Let’s see it be finalized - Trump has punked the media before, though I don’t think that there is any reason for that in this case.

Let’s just hope that whomever is placed in charge of that fustercluck of an agency is able to straighten out the horrible conditions and the horrible treatment of ordinary folks in the airports. There is no excuse to be harassing and mistreating old folks, pregnant women, handicapped kids and (the latest) women suffering from breast cancer. That $hit has GOT to stop - and we must start profiling, just like the Israelis (who haven’t had a plane hijacked or bombed in something like 35 years.

Nuke the coast guard and ICE? They are part of DHS. Sure, cut out the bureaucracy but the same can be said about the Pentagon

I don’t think that Trump has a milligram of admiration for Obama - this is just some necessary ass-kissing so that Obama doesn’t even further f-up things before January 20. Trump is, IMHO, doing what is necessary to ensure a smooth transition, and also to try to calm down the Dems so that there can be some cooperation between the parties in Congress. He doesn’t want to repeat Obola’s mistake of being a one-man show.

Be more concerned who is picked to head NSA, CIA and other Intel collection agencies (military as well) and how well the work together and with the WH; lack of communication between these Intel agencies are largely responsible for PH and 911. Without them, all the others are whistling in the dark.

“sources told CBS’ Major Garrett”

= = = = = = = = = = =

Definitely a non achiever

STARTED at 2nd Base (Major) and some 54 years later still at 2nd base (Major)

At least Major Major had a reason to not get promoted

+++++

“Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them. With Major Major it had been all three. Even among men lacking all distinction he inevitably stood out as a man lacking more distinction than all the rest, and people who met him were always impressed by how unimpressive he was.”

Nothing against Trump, but the country’s great strategic generals have all been Army. Go Army...beat Navy. (Not this year)

“And they are all WHITE ANGLO SAXONS! No more DIVERSITY!”

Really? Are you from DU, and trying to make everyone on FR look like a bunch of racist jackasses?

I think - no, correct that - I KNOW that you are wrong. There is nothing bad about having a mix of the genders (2 only, thank you very much) and races/ethnicities - so long as everyone involved is highly competent and loyal to the President. You want to guard against making the Republican Party seem even more like a WASP’s club. That is not the way to grow a movement, not the way to make others besides WASPs feel like they are valued by and part of this society. It is about attitudes and competence, nothing else, and certainly not irrelevant factors like skin color and where your ancestors came from.

WTF is wrong with you? Are Dr. Carson and Sheriff Clark (if he is appointed to anything) disqualified because they aren’t white and Anglo-Saxon? If they are, they you have a very big problem.

Look at who has been the head of DHS previously. Ridge, Chertoff, Napolitano, Beers, and Johnson. All of them amnesty supporters.

I hope he’ll find a place for David Clarke. I was thinking Homeland Security would be it.

He would do wonders heading up Customs and Border Protection. The Border Patrol needs a leader who will fight for the mission. The fact that he is a LEO is essential.

Why the virtue signalling? It is what it is.

“Nothing against Trump, but the country’s great strategic generals have all been Army.”

Mattis is very much in the mold of Patton - a great general not only because he is smart, but because he is an expert in military history. Read up on both of them - it is uncanny how much they are alike, even down to their looks (although Mattis is either a bit smarter in keeping his mouth shut, or luckier that such things don’t get you passed over or relieved, as was the case with Patton).

Oh, and FYI, Halsey and Curtis LeMay weren’t Army (and, no, I’m not buying that the “Army” Air Corps was really Army - that was the Army’s political pull being exercised when the Air Corps got started - you have a completely different mindset involved).

“Reinvigorate the FBI and the CIA in coordination with each other for sharper, quicker, more agile, and less bureaucratically encumbered intelligence.”

I think that will happen in Trump’s second term.

Curtis Lemay was Army. You can argue against it all you want, but it’s true.

Also, Mattis simply copied Petraeus.

So of the 3 flag officers you’ve mentioned, 2 were Army.

NONE...were Marines.

Thought Kris Kobach might get the nod but both good choices.
Where might Kobach land?

I don’t care that these guys are all WASPs - I just want the best people there for the job...and I suspect that Trump wants the same, as that has been what he’s done for his entire career. If the best were all straight male WASPs from Harvard or Yale, fine, I’d be all for that. But ditto if they are all lesbian black Buddist transexuals who barely graduated from Bumfuck Community College. Who CARES about such things (besides Dems and Leftists, who are FAR more racist and otherwise prejudiced than Republicans)?

This isn’t “virtue signalling” (which must be some PC term, cuz I never heard that phrase before). But it does piss me off when someone posts something that makes us all look bad. We don’t have the luxury of concentrating our efforts at rebuilding our nation or the Republican Party based on one ethnic/religious group, and even if we DID, it would be stupid because there are others of great ability (Dr. Carson being a prime example, but certainly not unique in this regard) that wouldn’t be used for the common good.

"At least Major Major had a reason to not get promoted"

Actually, "Major" is a fairly common name in South Louisiana. The local National Guard had a NCO whose last name was "Major", and whose rank was "Sergeant Major".

From the little I’ve heard Kobach speak on TV, I like him. He seems to be adamant about stopping illegal immigration and the need to protect our border, so perhaps he could be a deputy secretary with Sheriff Clarke head of US Customs and Border Protection.

I agree wholeheartedly. There needs to be a role for Clarke - he’s too much of a patriot, too good at what he does, too much of a loyalist and too much of an example for the Black community to leave in the cold. He would do this country proud.

I thought Rudy would be perfect for this gig - him or Sheriff Clark.
